    Ask The Pilot

I was wondering what the pilots view is on plane development . Is the development of new engines driving the development in planes, or is it the other way around? Also, JB, did Boeing ever talk to you about QF 30 ?

    Ask The Pilot

My question is prompted by the Air India crash. If the flaps are not used on takeoff how is the lift of the wing affected? If there is an engine failure the other engine is strong enough to lift the plane. Can the engines provide enough power to overcome the lack of lift if the wings are not...

    Ask The Pilot

Hi JB . The following ATSB report is about a A330 and it is interesting that the captain took a break between the event and before they landed. A330 engine malfunction incident detailed in ATSB preliminary report | ATSB I was wondering how the issue of fatigue is address in training after an...

JAL 777-300ER back on Sydney route

I found the hard product really nice. The food eclectic, entertainment limited and the service is really nice but not as friendly as the people can be. Would I fly them again..yes..

JAL 777-300ER back on Sydney route

On Japanese sites they are saying that JAL has stopped the disposal of the 777 due to slow delivery on new aircraft. So we may see the 777 back

    Ask The Pilot

Hi JB i was reading about the Gimli glider and i would like to get a better understanding of the event. With the fuel load being so much lower than expected , therefore the mass of the plane would be lower than expected. Would the pilots notice any difference in performance on takeoff , and...

Why Doesn't Qantas fly to Kuala Lumpur?

I am not sure that KL is the final destination for most of the passengers. A friend flew recently and most of the passanger were from India. I think MH is cashing in on on the India and perhaps China and Europe market.

Charging Devices in Flight without the use of Batteries

Batteries on a plane. Just a question for the experts. With the new rules of not being able to use your battery on the plane i was wondering is it faster to charge my phone/ipad , using the USB port or is it better to bring a charger and use the power point provided? Also would you use one of...

    Ask The Pilot

I was wondering with the 737 I have had what i call many rolling starts. That is, they dont stop on the runway but always rolling. How that works if the pilot flying is copilot. When does the captain hand over control of the plane? Also, when landing, is the issue the same but in reverse? On...

    Ask The Pilot

With the Cyclone being close to the airport in Brisbane in the next few days and assuming the airport remains open. I was wondering what new or enhanced risks a cyclone brings and what controls you would enhance when landing and taking off to mitigate the risks? I am not sure of the details...

How long to pack for a trip?

For work trips it takes 10 minutes and usually just before I go bed the night before. For holidays it takes longer maybe 2 hours as Mrs 747sp will want to take the right clothes for the weather and location. For big trips we may use a spare bedroom to put stuff we want to take. Our main thing...

Jetstar with Kids - no seat selection

    Ask The Pilot

For work i get to fly the Sydney to Melbourne return. When going south and they want to delay the flight we get a dog leg added out towards Lakes Entrance. On the way back if there are any delays it is usually near Goulburn and and is a very tight horse track type trip. Is there a reason why...

    Ask The Pilot

I was wondering with QF 520 and today's, Nov 8, engine failure is it a real life example of what you practice in the simulator? I don't know what happen after but would you expect the following planes that were to land or takeoff on the same runway to wait or divert until the runway is checked ?

What was your most memorable in-flight meal?

Mine is back in 1970s on a Qantas flight 3 to San Francisco from Sydney with a few stops on a 6 week old 747 238. I would have about 12. The menu was nice and the only issue was the starter which was tongue and I was not going to eat that... Food came and the starter i thought was Devon. Yum...

Checked luggage in Australia - why so long?

We flew from London to Frankfurt about 18 months ago on BA. Waited almost 2 hours for the luggage to appear. The people with airtags could see the bags were in the terminal but we assumed no one would move the bags onto the belt .. Except for lost luggage that is by far the longest we have ever...

    Ask The Pilot

I was looking at an article on the 777x and the photos to me show the engine as very close to the ground. I hope I am using the right terms but will the roll of the plane and/or the compression of the landing gear be an issue when landing with striking the runway or how is that risk mitigated...

    Ask The Pilot

Hi JB . In Singapore, recently a Qantas a380 had hydraulic issues and had to return. When taxiing, some tyres failed. Can you help me understand the link that caused the tyres to fail https://avherald.com/h?article=51af7455&opt=0

Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

I agree too. I have a few friends who have to regularly fly to London and New York and it is all about minimising the travel time. They express interest in the non stop flight as it is one less place for things to go wrong.
