    Tips on Tipping

How do you tip hotel cleaners? Do you take the money to the front desk? Add it when you settle the bill as you check out? Or do you leave it in the room? Do you leave a note with it, or leave it in some special place, or is any cash left lying around assumed to be a tip in the US?

Qantas Blanket on eBay - with permission ?????

Before Kindles were widely available in stores in Australia, I was doing quite nicely buying myself a new one every year and selling my old one, second hand, for more than the purchase price of a new one from Amazon.

    Noise Cancelling Headphones

It's also impractical with the QC20s, as they stick out too far. You could just leave in the one in the outside ear, I guess.

    Noise Cancelling Headphones

In a moment of weakness, I bought a pair on the way back from China last week, to supplement my QC15s and Bose IE2s and my MIE2s and my Klipsch and Phillips and Apple earphones. (It's... a weakness). They are lovely. Very comfy and incredibly good noise cancellation. The cord length is ample. My...

    Who remembers acoustic headsets?

I remember them from childhood, and how they hurt my ears. The second part of in-flight entertainment in those days was the free deck of cards you could get on every flight, if you asked. And instead of the activity packs for kids that they have these days, kids were given little winged brooches...

    NBN Discussion

We have enough bandwidth for low-resolution videoconferencing, which is fine for one-on-one conversations. We don't have enough bandwidth currently to videoconference effectively with a room full of people. With current bandwidth, you either can't see facial details of people in the other room...

    NBN Discussion

Let's say someone comes up with an idea for a new service that 70% of households would want. If everyone already has the connection, the idea is highly commercial and can go ahead, as can the next 10 or 20 innovations like it. If only a few people have the connection, it's a non-starter. Sure...

    NBN Discussion

As others have pointed out, the speed that the average person needs is rapidly increasing, and it makes more sense to put in the infrastructure in one go rather than have to go back a second time to retrofit after speed is lagging behind need. Equally important, if everyone has reliable, high...

    Luggage

What luggage do you recommend for me? My top priority is heavy-duty wheels, though it's also important that the luggage itself not be too heavy. My large, 15-year old Hummer luggage has finally developed a crack in its wheels. This bag has been great: a soft bag with a firm base big (20cm...

What changes would you make to the Qantas Booking site?

It'd be nice to be able to save a few standard searches in my FF profile and select them using radio buttons rather than searching from scratch each time. CBR-Christchurch return, CBR to Brisbane, CBR to Hobart...

    Left iPad in Seat Pocket...

I left a Kindle on a QF flight last year. Qantas had phoned me before I got home and had it waiting for me at baggage services.

    Noise Cancelling Headphones

With some brands, though they get good reviews from others, I find the speaker tips are too big, so it doesn't matter what bud size I use, they won't sit in my ear canals properly. For me, the Klipsch in-ear earbuds are very comfortable and almost always stay in place.

    Noise Cancelling Headphones

One trick to help then stay in better if you are moving around a lot is to loop the cord over your ears (front to back), which reduces the drag on the earbuds. I do that when I go jogging in mine, and it makes a big difference. You could also try the new Bose noise-cancelling in-ear headphones...

Re: Official Trip Report (part 2) Thanks everyone -- I enjoyed the trip and the chance to meet a few of you. Thanks for being so friendly.

Back to meeting at 5pm in the hotel lobby, then?

Be first to see the new Qantas Frequent Flyer 'Curiosity' campaign [on June 13th]

The funny thing is, I am a bit excited. If I'd been asked to fly up to Sydney and attend a coughtail function for work this week, I'd have said, "no." I'm way to busy this week. But because it's a prize, I have found the time and am happy about it :)

No more flight announcements in the Qantas Club [Repudiated by Red Roo]

Sure, I can do all that without any real difficulty. I could also bring my own lunch, sit on the floor, and arrange a courier to transport my baggage. It's just that I'd rather not.

No more flight announcements in the Qantas Club [Repudiated by Red Roo]

So I'll now need to a) remember these differences; b) perform an (admittedly trivial) calculation each time I fly; c) either set a reminder for myself or keep watching the clock; d) when my expected boarding time approaches, either use an app/google to look for changes or walk across the room to...

No more flight announcements in the Qantas Club [Repudiated by Red Roo]

Does it have boarding times or just departure times? Departure times are much less useful, as time from boarding to departure depends in practise on the airport and aircraft.
