For a data point but slightly OT I upgraded on BA SEA-LHR from W to J during their recent promo but only got economy SC's and points to the QF program. Thought about fighting for the points but I was just happy with the cheap upgrade.

There isn't technically a business as they refer to it as first. If you search for rewards through the qantas booking engine HNL-(LAX)-LAS comes up for 75,000 one way in first class.

By the person that receives it. I've seen it happen on a number of occasions as well, I've received it gratefully myself once. There's more happiness in giving than receiving so when you're the receiver showing some genuine appreciation will always make the givers day IMHO
