    Seat poacher

A few days ago I accidently poached 5A when allocated 4A on QF A220. I counted 3 rows of Business class on the left side and instinctively took the window seat of the 4th row on the right. Much bewilderment when occupant of 5A came along and said 'you're in my seat' but happily sat in 4A. After...

Slow Processing of Inbound PAX at SYD T1

Staff instruction when I worked at SYD, an ICAO standard/ recommended practice apparently. Annex 9 on facilitation perhaps. Related to crew being on minimum rest, not being delayed etc. Pre- Smart gate days, QF crew were very aware of this.

Slow Processing of Inbound PAX at SYD T1

You could be gazumped by another crew as well. They are entitled to priority over everyone in the crew lane, even if its a 'shared' lane. Some crews feel like a douche as well (fell its a bad look for the company) pushing in. Many use Smartgate too, which reduces the odds of gazumping.

And contains much the same information as on the chip, other than the photo.

Slow Processing of Inbound PAX at SYD T1

The international standards for (e)passports, require that they use at least Basic Access Control (BAC) or higher level of security. The relevant part of that to scanning the MRZ to use Smartgate is that the check digits contained in the MRZ are required and be correct to be able to read and...

Slow Processing of Inbound PAX at SYD T1

Main vendor under (or not delivering) stuff and lining up all the ducks from other agencies were the main causes. There was a much larger plan to replace/introduce a range of inter agency information transfer technology off the back of this project - some not traveller related, this tech...

Qantas Hotels - earning points on cancelled non refundable booking

Seems about right, you don't get points if you no show on a flight. Can't see why this would be different. Whether it's fair or not is a different question.

International to Domestic Connecting flight in Sydney Airport

Yes you do need to collect luggage at Sydney when clearing Customs and Immigration. 1.5 hours is quite optimistic, although I've rechecked baggage made it across to the domestic terminal in the early am in 45 minutes after getting off the plane. This would be very much the exception though. As...

Oneworld Classic Flight Reward Discussion - The Definitive Thread

No, but the amount of points charged will be the rate for the highest class booked, even if it is only one flight out of many.

Do Australian Border Force officers deliberately provoke passengers?

While Quarantine is not Border Force, the term racial profiling gets used a lot for both. The were specific flights where certain nationalities would be selected particularly for quarantine checks. An example was (maybe still so) Hong Kong Chinese around the time of year the delicacy 'birds...

Do Australian Border Force officers deliberately provoke passengers?

As a former Customs (aka Border Force) officer who worked at Sydney for awhile , the answer is no for nearly all of the staff. The remaining could be quite embarrassing at times, especially when the target is from a non English speaking background. And every large workplace has its 'problem...

Op-ed: Airlines Must Take the Seatbelt Sign More Seriously

I don't think the FAA (in reference to AA) mandates shades up for take off and landings for US carriers unless the airline has it in their standard procedures. Then they would get into trouble for not following their procedures.
