Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

Yes Australian passport. Employer sponsored, so it was easy as my role was moving to Switzerland as part of a suite of roles moving there as part of an agreement with one of the Swiss cantons. Mind you, it only came through 2 days before my flight to ZRH. (Could have moved there...

Transit through US a good idea or not?

There does seem to be slightly higher risk if you have some form of linkage to the US but don't have approval to live there permanently (such as spouse is American, student visas, working visas etc) rather than tourists per se, and don't see too many (any?) in relation to those transitting and...

    SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

I don’t think so as it is >24hrs therefore I’d guess it would be considered arrival access. Can always ask, the worst outcome is that they say no.

Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

In August, whether was fantastic and I love swimming, and the lakes are really warm as well. Sometimes after coming home from work I'd simply head somewhere nearby for a swim. Here are some Zurichsee (Lake Zurich) @ Wollishofen: Luzern: and with Mt Pilatus in the background Zug...

Transit through US a good idea or not?

Haven’t experienced it myself but there are a number of reports by longstanding AFFers that despite having to clear the border DFW is one of the easier places to transit in the US and unlike most ports you can have your bags checked through to other international destinations without having to...

    SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

Depends on the time of year and the day of week. From 22 Jun- 8 Sep the two cities are decoupled. Only SIN-BCN or SIN-MXP services. For the rest of the year ( I think) it is 2xweekly SIN-BCN, 3xweekly SIN-MXP-BCN and 4x weekly SIN-MXP services .

Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

So next up was a trip to Lauterbrunnen. Originally going to do a long trek up from nearby Wengen, the weather wasn't kind, so this morphed into a valley and waterfall walk as the mountains all under cloud. This involved a change of train at Bern, and another change at Interlaken. Bern is...

Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

I went back with my partner 6 weeks later, after an early September snow dump. We caught the cable car up this time, as we deliberately didn't reach there until early afternoon (just when the clouds were clearing, as predicted). No swimming this time.

Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

First proper excursion was a daytrip to the spectular Oeschinensee in the Bernese Oberland. This was a Saturday morning train, which was rather packed with daytripping hikers with their gear, and was struggling to find a seat, until someone called my name, two of my colleagues were on the same...

Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

As for planning, typically my plans would be made the evening before, and actually there's a lot to be said for this sort of travel (even if not occupied weekdays) as in basing yourself somewhere central and taking day trips with the occasional overnighter rather than moving point to point...

Switzerland: hiking, mountains, glaciers, lakes and plenty of trains

I spent several months in Switzerland last year during the end of summer and all of autumn. Whilst I worked during the week, on weekends and some days off there was plenty of opportunity to explore Switzerland (and areas close to the border in neighbouring countries). This won't be a regular...

QF37 to QF1 transfer in SIN

The opposite point of view, is that thousands of people make 1:20 tighter connections at Changi Airport every day. 19 times of 20 (or maybe even higher) without any issues. It all really gets down to personality and how they would cope with that 1 in 20 or less chance of a disruption (and...

    SQ Tips, Trips and Tales

What is the connection time? I believe it is <24 hrs should be OK, but others probably have more experience. A 7am arrival, with departure the next day at 10pm is almost certainly a no. Reverse that, 7pm arrival, 10am departure probably OK.

QF37 to QF1 transfer in SIN

Looking at the last month or so of data, QF 37 should give you a good 4-5hr connection time anyway 🤣 It seems that QF1 is far more likely to be delayed than QF37.

Article: Public Servants Spent $1 Million More on Flights During Double Qantas Status Credits

For many of us, if it’s a publicly listed company there’s a good chance they are spending our money too, in the form of super. Same same but different.

Qantas forcing everyone to use self-service check-in kiosks in AKL

Having it as an option is great. But I agree that for a premium class on a premium carrier there should be a staffed option as well. IMHO, the day that you front up to a kiosk, stare into the camera and it recognises you straight away and spits out your boarding pass* (perhaps asking you a...

    Careful around DB (Deutsche Bahn)

Watch those Swiss delays. I mean they have a good track record, but I experienced multiple late trains - by a minute or two 🤣 Although in all seriousness, SBB delays can be relatively common - on international routes they operate from other countries (particularly Italy and Germany) back to...

    What cheeses me off

I’d take it as a good sign actually. This time you might have won. But the fact that you’ve got other priorities that outweigh placing bets is probably a good thing. The sorts of gamblers that get into real trouble with debt would never ever miss a bet.

QF37 to QF1 transfer in SIN

20-25 mins walk would probably be worst case scenario from end of one pier to the end of the other. Could be and often is much closer than that. QF37’s main reason for existing is to transfer passengers to QF1 ( and KLM to Amsterdam on QF codeshare), so wouldn’t be worried.
