My Personal Valuation of Qantas FF and Velocity Points

You can get around 3c/point for QF international premium classes, particularly maximising oneworld awards. Basically I only use them if they are worth at least 2c/point as a direct comparison. Anything less, pay cash and save points for when they'll save more cash per point. Virgin are much...

    EY Gold Status match

Mine is all good. Expiry will be 03/17 based on past matches. Did you ask them to set up the account for you rather than doing it yourself then applying? That's the only reason I can think of.

Best Banks for Long Overseas Stay.

I set up bank accounts in the US, China, England, France and here with HSBC. Altogether cost $0. Each one has their own card and is set up in their own currency so you've only got the one time exchange. But can access them all and transfer between them on a single screen online. For long trips...

I don't agree with some of this but love the blunt, no nonsense writing style!

    Australian Housing Affordability Discussion

His answer was that the supply side needs to be improved. He spent a while trying to educate on why he thought that was necessary. He also flagged the need to properly enforce foreign ownership restrictions which have been flaunted effectively in recent times. The only thing being isolated and...

    Australian Housing Affordability Discussion

It's a good point. I think the bloke just needs to play his audience a bit better. Any statement that could conceivably be isolated, taken out of context and construed as insensitive will always get the victim personalities out in force with righteous anger. It doesn't take long before what was...

    Australian Housing Affordability Discussion

Re: The totally off-topic thread The trick seems to be to get the hell out of Sydney. It needs a correction. The rest of the country isn't too bad. Discussing this with Sydney cousins in their 20s the other day, I can't understand why they want to buy their own house right now. Rents aren't...

I learnt a valuable lesson yesterday

The comedy of successive errors required to get this outcome is hilarious. I'd call it a net win for the story value.

How do you share your travel adventures on social media?

It's interesting to hear regular travellers take on this. The "will my friends find this funny/interesting?" test is a good one I reckon. And you're right, even though something I post might not get much interaction, everyone I know talks about it with me next time I see them so the posts still...

Malaysian (MAS) has gone into receivership

Re: Breaking: MH files for Administration I flew back from Europe a few years ago in Y LHR-KUL-BNE. Was really well timed leaving LHR late, arriving KUL early evening, leaving KUL mid morning after big sleep and arriving in BNE around 7pm. Jet lag sorted. And dirt cheap (about AU$600 one way)...

Bit of a shudder. All systems back on track with seemingly no harm done. They seem to be going around lately.

    EY Gold Status match

Any word on the cards coming out? The initial email said it was valid for entry until May 31st by which time the cards will have arrived but haven't heard anything since.

What's your prediction on the Australian Dollar?

Similar idea to you. I'd be inclined to fix it over a 3 year horizon. Variable if it was 1 year. I'd say we might see one or at most 2 more cuts before we start heading back the other way some time next year. Across the 3 years, I'm inclined to lean towards slightly higher average than the...

    Platinum [benefits]

Technically not allowed but it depends. IME just waving the card is usually all that is required but occasionally they do check for a flight. Chances are much better than 50-50 so I'd say worth a shot.

Any way for an Aussie to stay in Europe longer than 3 months?

The 90 in 180 rule is just for Schengen - it depends where you are going. You can stay longer by spending time in the UK/Ireland or far east Europe (ie anywhere outside Schengen). There are longer stay Visas available in various Schengen countries with proof of income but they are a bit of a...

    Platinum [benefits]

Most missed benefits since downgrade: 1. F Lounges. Especially in SYD/MEL but also DXB/HKG/NRT/KUL/LHR. 2. Arrivals lounge access domestically and in HKG/LHR. 3. Extra award availability. 4. WP Shadow. 5. Better status matches.

    Trip to China - advice

Australian credit cards usually work as others said but I had one issue at Lugu Lake where I ran out of money and my HSBC Visa wasn't accepted at the only ATM. That caused a LOT of problems. So if you are venturing far from the city I'd keep some spare RMB with you just in case.
