I believe United release J reward seats to VA (and other partners) very close to departure, ie. within 2 weeks or so. So you could look for availability on Velocity and if there is some, try calling up to change and pay the additional points and change fee.

From memory, you get an email from Star Alliance pretty quickly asking you to choose your preferred status airline, and then you have to wait for them to confirm you have received the status. General consensus seems to be that this always takes the full 2 weeks, but YMMV.
