Airports have their own music. Who knew?

I recently put two conferences on in Siem Reap with over 1,000 pax. We actually got the main hotel to change their music to ours, which we supplied. My colleague worked for many years with Shangrila/Sheraton/Hyatt and understands that "first hit" when the delegate walks into a venue. The hotel's...

Disinfectant Spray on arrival at SYD

I noticed they did the spray between SIN and KCH two weeks ago on MH. I cannot remember them doing this before. There was no spraying on my other internal East Malaysian flights or from SDK to KUL.

Quick trip to Asia from SYD

Yes, laziness on my part. Will check it out when I'm there Tuesday, eating at Top Spot, one of the great outdoor eateries. Also known as Cat City.

Quick trip to Asia from SYD

Yes, Firefly has taken a lot of routes MH had done previously. KUC to BKI in J was a great SC builder as there were some great specials, like RM380 (~AUD130) for 40SC. The MH website doesn't seem to default back to Firefly and quotes you KUC > KUL > BKI.

Quick trip to Asia from SYD

Writing this from Siem Reap, and it's worth coming for two days. I've been here working for three weeks and can assure you three days is enough. Then off to Kucking/KK. Problems with East Malaysia are the flights. MAS cut their direct flights from KUC to KK a while back, which I find a bit...

    Made any travel mistakes lately?

Not a mistake, but almost a classic from MU! I have a conference in Northern China starting on 12/9, and they are going to get me there on 17/9!!!! So I had to make the extremely hard decision to stay another week in the Sofitel Angkor Wat. "Dear Mr./Ms.xx_xx_X, we regret to inform you that...

Cash or Card? Countries where you still need cash.

I had the same happen with Pullman in Singapore. Three MC failed. Called Westpac, and they could see nothing wrong. Called the hotel and they blamed their system, so I did it manually.

Cash or Card? Countries where you still need cash.

I used the ATM here in Siem Reap yesterday and scored a nice little jackpot. One of my hobbies is banknote collecting and for years used the machines to get nice pristine notes, (UNC uncirculated). Last night, getting USD scored a UNC USD100 star note, selling at the moment between $125 to $150...

Conference Banners - anyone have any techniques?

To go off topic a bit, delegates are starting to tell us flights are becoming harder to find to get into REP for the conferences. 1,000 pax now, and most BKK flights are gone, so we are telling them to head over to DMK, plenty there. SQ is charging AUD1,750 in Y OW for the Sunday. I'm finding...

Conference Banners - anyone have any techniques?

For the bigger cities, yes, very streamlined and easy to do, but in the world of hotel conference management, places like REP and Kuching are "backwaters". The simple overhead projector is not a problem, but getting in a 14m LED screen is a challenge.

    China Tourism Visa

I just got a visa for China, flying out and back from Cambodia. Have a conference where I'm speaking so had an invitation letter and got the M visa. I had no real issue, and it was back in five days, other than the pain of filling in the form and then heading into the Visa office. I could be...

Conference Banners - anyone have any techniques?

I'm actually Chair of two conferences, both in two weeks' time in Siem Reap. 900+ pax, 130 exhibitors over five days. I see the delegates bring them in all ways; Checked, hand and shipped in. There doesn't seem to be any one formula, although some actually get us to manufacture their posters...

    Made any travel mistakes lately?

Just made one that has already cost me over $1,000. Using J SQ as my "backbone leg" (my term for my main flight with all the other flights hanging off it) up to Siem Reap and return. Before the return going to China, then back to REP. Change of plans had to add a leg to Kuching out of SIN...

The client accepted the change. I rarely have a trip that does not result, at least, in one change.

    Jury Duty

I was called to the Supreme Court in Victoria, and they just told us to wait until we were in front of the judge. It was a fairly simple process in explaining the reason, and about 10 of us were dismissed. Although I had the opposite in the past 12 months, I was an expert witness in the Supreme...

    Openflights vs MyFlightRadar24

Well, like RooFlyer, I did the "plunge" and updated MyFR24. It took me three weeks, along with 4 emails to the help team, but finally updated. I had an old MyFR24 when AFF left OF and I just decided not to update it, or go across to OF itself. Big mistake!!!! Cutting and dissecting Xcel...

Charles De Gaulle - Pre Flight Arrival Time

I was in and out of CDG the other week, actually on Aegean from Athens T1, then out to BKK T2 a few days later. Travel crowds are getting back to normal, and you're travelling in peak season, so don't cut it too thin. And don't underestimate walking times through CDG. Getting to the airport...

    What is a global traveller?

I thought it was a new line of luggage!!!! I think the individual concept of g-t depends on your age, aspirations and, most important to me is attitude. And I split this into "tourist v traveller". The reference above to Contiki, to me, is in the tourist category, like those swilling bottled...

You know you are a frequent flyer when ...

I'm taking my two daughters and granddaughter on two separate trips in the next few months, one to Cambodia, and the other to Japan. They are amazed at how I can memorise the airports, hotels, transport, etc., to the point of being blasé. But what I do love about both of them is that "travel...

Baggage dilemma - fix or retire

It had a lot more barcodes and has never been lost. It has missed about 3 connections as being too tight, but not lost, touch wood. Ironically other bags have disappeared so my theory is they take more care with this one!
