    MEL-SIN-LHR-AMS-SIN-MEL on SQ and BA

SQ J lounge in MEL is seriously sub-standard. I'm surprised you were only a little dissapointed. I'm AirNZ *A Gold, so use teh Koru Club if flying SQ out of MEL. SIN, on the other hand is tremendous.

    CX new seats to HKG

I flew new CX J yesterday (CX104) and was really impressed. My only slight whinge is that the gap to the leg rest is almost too long. I'm just under 6' and I had to stretch. Space, comfort, IFE, privacy all brilliant. Well done CX.

Turnaround times - just how fast can they be????

I often fly regional NZ routes, particularly in and out of NPE. AirNZ regularly turn them around in 15 minutes or so.

    Qantas (QF) in the news

I was (meant to be) on this flight yesterday. Spent 8 hours in the Qantas Club, watched police do their patrols in the actual Club on 4 occasions, struggled to find a seat, 5 deep at the bar once open. Lovely place to be!

    Cathay J Seating

It would seem you are on the newly configured J on Cathay, not the old herringbone. The 2 middle seats are the best option for a couple.

Good Providore near Hilton South Wharf

I fully endorse the South Melbourne Market recommendation. Not only is it closer than QV Market, but it has some of the best food stalls in melbourne.

What was your shortest flight ?

Flew Montevideo to Buenos Aires once on AA, not long after 9/11. The security process took much longer than the flight time.

    CX ex PEK

I'm on CX MEL/HKG return in Sept and the seat map suggests new layout. Fingers crossed.

Stopover in SIN. Transit between terminals

That's plenty of time, particularly in SIN where everything is so efficient. Just jump on the air-side transfer trains, no need to clear immigration. You pass security in SIN where you enter your gate lounge (outside teh actual gate lounge, arriving and departing passengers mix.)

Travel to and in Europe with 13 month old?

    Vellergen is great.

Transfer at LAX TBIT QF - AA

Do you have an APEC card? If so the immigration wait will be shorter and 2 hours is plenty.

How good is the massage in the first class lounge in SYD?

I've been in Mel F when it's very quiet and they approach you in the lounge inviting you to go for a massage. Great service all round in the F lounge.

Would you say bye to SWMBO or HWMBO for an upgrade?

Always take the updgrade. Often I'm travelling for business in J and teh wife and kids have been along for a holiday in Y. On long haul we aften share the seat for some shut eye and respite from the kids. On short haul swapping boarding passes can make it "fair" in the long run.

Moving from NZ Airpoints to KF?

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'm keen on maintaining Koru access when in NZ on domestic travel in Y. I'll probably stay where I am and use the SQ J travel to keep the NZ status up.

    Flying Singapore Airlines A380

I've flown both SQ and QF on the 380. As a solo traveller, SQ wins hands down IMO. The privacy and ease of access to the aisles for everyone is a clear advantage. I once travelled on the wide SQ seats with my wife (on a 777 I think). We had the 2 centre seats but she did not like having to...

    Living-Away-From-Home Allowance Changes

For people heading o/s from Australia, the allowances that ATO will accept are published on the ATO website. The rate depends on salary, where you are and what is being covered (eg incidentals/meals/accom.) I don't think that the recent changes have targeted these allowances, rather I think it...

Moving from NZ Airpoints to KF?

I am currently a gold Airpoints member. While I fly a bit TT on Air NZ (Y) and use them domestically, most of my status comes from using SQ in J on long haul flights 2 or 3 times a year. (Note I am also QF WP and use OW airlines most of the time.) I'm toying with the idea of joining KF in...

Cathay Flights to Australia - new business or not?

I've flown teh coffin style many times. Mostly o/n and slept as well as I ever have on a plance (I'm almost 6' and not slim.) A couple of times I've been on a day flight and it gets pretty cramped if you want a laptop going and some paperwork at the same time. Haven't yet sampled the new...

    Singapore Hotel

I agree with the recommendation for the Royal Plaza on Scott's, it is far more reasonably priced than the others in the area (eg Hyatt, Marriot etc). In the past it has also often been the wotif mystery deal at a good rate. You can pick it by comparing the hotel facilites for distinctive items.

Simple things that make a hotel great

I asked once for a local paper in a regional NZ town when I checked in one afternoon. (I like to catch up on the happenings before dinner with the local managers.) I've been back to the hotel regularly since and everytime the local paper is in the room when I check in. Great service!
