Amex Platinum and Radisson Rewards Premium Membership

I observed when this happened late last year and the consensus seemed to be they eventually would fix a specific account if you asked. But I had no imminent need to stay at a Radisson so I hoped there would eventually be a broad fix without my intervention. On Saturday I received an email...

Qatar Airways Business & First Class meals

This is disappointing. The design in the QR lounges is beautiful. The only time I used the LHR one, I was extremely hungover and just drank ginger ale so I can't comment on the food. But I had à la carte dining at the CDG lounge a few months ago and it was lovely. (BKK was also lovely but my...

20% Bonus Velocity Points on Auto transfer

I think the implication is that they transfer Amex>Velocity (2.00:1.00, plus 20% bonus) then onward Velocity>KrisFlyer (1.55:1.00). With the bonus, this resolves to 2.58:1.00, which is more efficient than going straight from Amex to KrisFlyer at 3.00:1.00.

    Seasonal DRW-DOH floated

Looks like DPS is a pretty efficient routing from CNS or DRW to DOH, and indeed that DRW works for a routing CNS-DOH too: http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=CNS-DRW-DPS-DOH,+CNS-DPS-DOH,+CNS-DRW-DOH,+CNS-DOH And DPS is already a port with a significant volume of QR metal; it looks like there are two...

    Seasonal DRW-DOH floated

This is behind a paywall, but: Wouldn't, say, OOL make more sense if they were going to add another route to Australia outside the four limited ports (and assuming WSI is treated common with SYD when it opens)? Unless they were thinking of using maybe an A330 and it's a range issue? Whatever DRW...

    Virgin Australia flights to Doha

I think the centre seats are locked as standard on QR native flights, too; it's something to do with keeping them for couples and families. The rear-facing true window seats are great, though. 1K and 3K should do nicely, @Secco.

Article: Why is Dynamic Currency Conversion Even Legal?

I oppose legal restrictions on all sorts of financial practices so if I had my druthers, DCC wouldn't be illegal. But this is not a country where such principles generally prevail. And as highlighted earlier, Australian regulation has actively salted the earth where useful credit products could...

Article: Why is Dynamic Currency Conversion Even Legal?

Yes, as I understand it Amex prohibits DCC on its payment network. The problem (apart from acceptance) is that all AU-issued Amex cards have a foreign-transaction fee. The US market, if your have access to it, is different; my US Gold card has 0% FTF.

Article: Why is Dynamic Currency Conversion Even Legal?

Sorry, yes, I agree Matt's issuer is clearly not at fault here. Nonetheless, that's the channel where one has to start when raising a DCC complaint. I did once try Visa directly when Citi (my issuer) refused to action a similar case, but they just referred me back to Citi. So despite Visa's own...

Qatar Airways Business & First Class meals

Maybe it's partly an airspace thing? From FRA/MUC to RUH only a short fraction at the end of the flight would be over KSA. But DOH-RUH would be over Saudi for almost the entire flight time.

Article: Why is Dynamic Currency Conversion Even Legal?

Yes, the terminal and ATM prompts are in many cases clearly composed to intentionally further confuse the issue and trick even savvy users into accepting DCC against their will. 1739011605 For the record I think you should dispute this with your issuer, Matt.

Article: Why is Dynamic Currency Conversion Even Legal?

The ACCC should absolutely not be let off the hook for punishing Visa when Visa discouraged DCC. It's one more instance where the Australian regulation has intervened to make credit cards materially worse for Australian customers, just as when they forced Visa and MasterCard to get rid of their...

Qatar Airways Business & First Class meals

This is interesting as a comparison to RUH because IIRC Sharjah is the only one of the constituent emirates of the UAE which strictly prohibits alcohol even for nonMuslims.

Yes, although I believe this is expected to disappear eventually since Alaska has a different credit partnership.

Likewise, we got it on our Reserve and supp but not the Edge or Plat which would pay more points on the same dollars for fuel.

I've only done M&WCo in Melbourne but they are kid-friendly and I imagine it's similar in Sydney.

    Virgin Australia flights to Doha

Based on playing around in the QR app just now, it seems like (for me at least, YMMV): If you search for MEL/SYD-DOH award space, you get the VA-prime flights as well as QR-prime. But if you search for MEL/SYD-FCO/CDG, you get only the QR-prime departures from Aust. So maybe it just won't...

    Virgin Australia flights to Doha

It didn't occur to me that it might be available to partners (other than QR) until you mentioned this. I also can match VA-prime (for example) MEL-DOH, on Aeroplan. I can't find the same flights through MileagePlus or KrisFlyer though. I also don't imagine you can book beyond DOH onto QR-prime...

    General Virgin Australia discussion

So there will be a moving map (and apparently a more schmick 3D one) consistently available on all versions of the IFE eventually?
