Come on all you experience J flyers give me some insight traveling in J to LAX, as QF have a sale on $6400 from Per via SYD , is this a good price and is it worth the extra $ compared to Y+ all your EXPERT advice will make my decision a lot easier, also (1) which are the best seats, ( 2) if starting the full flight from PER in domestic J do I get the free pick up? (how many SCs and points for the return trip? thanks in advance

To start, this is a very reasonable price. Definitely worth doing J compared to Y+.
As far as seats go, row 11-13 are the best on A380, Row 5 or 14 on a 744. It all depends on what status with QF you have. Per to Syd most likely be on an A332. Too many what if's with seat selection there. Chauffeur Drive will pick up and drop off in Perth and LA as Perth is the start and end of the sector. SC's should total 520. Almost Gold in 1 trip..!!!!

HiDmac thanks for the reply, what would you recommend A380 or 744< will be gold when we do the trip, so you say pick up and drop off both ends by Chauffeur eh?

Def A380, have done both and although 744 (refurb) have new MKII sky beds, A380 is a much quieter / nicer aircraft IMO. Being Gold, you may be limited for seat selection. Especially up the front (11-13).

The difference b/w Y+ and J will be appreciated by your body clock on the return sectors in particular. The late departures ex USA to OZ are a nightmare in economy. Crossing the dateline is just not fun on the return.

Thanks guys for the input, you have all swayed me ,, just one thing to make it clear definetly pickup and drop off both ends ?

Depends on the price of your Y+ tickets I suppose. I personally wouldn't value J at 2x Y+ (which is what it usually is), but if you were already looking at $5k for Y+ it'd be a different story.

I say yes......and to prove it - I just booked 4 tickets for X-mass.

We're doing BNE-SYD-LAX.....LAX-JFK......DFW-BNE all in for under $23k. Was going to book whY, then saw the price of PE - booked it via the hold option.....then saw the price of J - booked it. Then had to call the QFF to cancel the PE booking.

Happy days!

$6500 in J for PER to LAX is a very good price and even though it is double the price of Y+, it is totally worth it. Definitely choose the A380 over the B744 and definitely try to get seats in the front mini cabin (row 11-13), which is available for golds and above.

Anyway, I just got tickets to New York for $6500 in J. Excellent price!

Don't forget the old upgrade into F trick.

You have lost me on the"upgrade trick " also hopefully will make Gold by end of Sept if so will I be able get a better selection of seats? (Getting picky now eh)?

You can use points to upgrade to First class. I've just hit the the button for 4 seats for our trip in December........Syd-Lax will cost you 45,000 points a seat.

You can do this via the view my booking page.

As amaroo has pointed out, I would definitely recommend upgrading your seat to first from business. At least for SYD-LAX, this way your wife and yourself can dine together in the suite with the full degustation tasting menu, not to mention it is an epic seat/suite.

I would probably not bother with J->F on the way back though, because assuming you're on QF12 or QF94, (A380), or QF108 (747), you'll be leaving LAX around 10:30pm or later, in which case, most of the flight is just sleep. (J Skybed Mk2 is fine for sleeping, though myself at 6ft9in I prefer F) :P

BTW, if you haven't checked it out/booked it already, Chauffer Drive info is here -> Chauffeur Drive | Qantas

Absolutely agree. We've entered the lottery for the SYD-LAX (QF11) however, deliberately decided to fly back to BNE on QF8 as the J seats are the same & we wouldn't bother wasting points upgrading to F on the way back.

That sounds a great idea upgrading, the only problem I have I may fall short of 45000 pts, any suggestions just used a lot of points on a run? Will have enough for one seat.
