QF SG - is it worth it?

I've been offered a status challenge (200SC/90Day).

Curious, my major flying days are over and I probably wouldn't fly enough QF/One World metal to get another 600SC for next year; is it worth giving QF SG a go? For any QF SG flyers out there - What do you see as it's major benefits? Lounge?

Just looking at what's on offer; unless you fly frequently (for lounge & priority) it's not that exciting? Or am I missing something?

I am lifetime gold having dropped from platinum. In my opinion the only real benefit is Oneworld lounge access, business check in and premium boarding. Would it kill me if i didn't have it? No. Is it a nicety? Yes

Do you have much flying in the future where you would use it to its fullest?

If not then don't bother doing any special flights to attain it.

Agree lounge access is the only real (and consistent) benefit in my opinion. QC membership may be a better alternative??

From the QF website: https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/tier-benefits#benefits-of-gold

For us One World Emerald status was worthwhile for our RTW itinerary (for a QF OneWorld Award).
Lost it soon after :(

QFF Gold is OWS (Oneworld Sapphire) not Emerald. QFF Platinum/P1 are OWE.

Really if one does not see much more than leisure flying ahead it may not really be worth it, though I would imagine doing the challenge (ie: 200SC/90 days) would give at least a year of Gold, which may have some value in the next year or so.

but if one only sees a few trips coming up, then the lounge stuff may just not be worth the effort to get there. It's a difficult call, but that you ask the question it seems like you feel it probably isn't for you - and that seems a reasonable call.

For me, OWS status is very handy in the USA (Access to AAdmirals clubs, priority check in, free bag allowance etc) is definitely VERY good. in Australia QC access is very nice, and is probably the main benefit.

It may well depend on one's expected travel and what benefits one might contemplate taking advantage of before deciding if it's worth it or not.

As others have said it really depends on your upcoming flight activity and what use you'd get out of it.

Sometimes a lounge is very busy or there is no wait at check in therefore the benefits don't seem as great as they could be, however if you're travelling international during school holidays or get delayed in USA for several hours the benefits can really kick in with premium check in and lounge access.

Regardless, 200SCs is much better than 600SCs :)

Without elite status, crediting to the QFF program (with the intention of someday obtaining an award flight or upgrade) is probably a wishful thinking exercise. So add that to lounge access and business check-in to consider the benefit.

Happy wandering

Fred

From someone who does somewhere between 60-75 domestic flights a year (red e-deal's as well), and recently jumped into the Qantas SG world, it makes all the difference from PS. Lounge Access, priority boarding/check in/security/seat access etc. means that my life is made that little bit more enjoyable. Even more so when I travel OS on OW airlines with extra baggage/lounge access (showers!) and everything else that goes with it.

If your major flying days are over (i'm reading that as multiples of flights), yet you still plan on doing some a couple of OS trips in Y, the extra baggage allowance and lounge access (showers!) would more than make up for it. If it was minimal OS travel and a couple of domestic trips between capital cities, I personally wouldn't worry about it...

That would depend on what's important to you, how much it would cost and whether you have plans for more flights in the next 18 months.

For me lounge access, seat selection, luggage allowance and priority check-in are all important. Never want to stand in another economy check-in queue ever, especially in Asia.

Ive dropped down to silver due to being unable to fly (medical) when my year clicked over. Am back to flying now and what I miss most is the priority queue. Thankfully back to SG in December. I should add I am a QP member otherwise that would hit the top.

As a life time silver, I go to the priority queue if in Y, and if flying in J or F of course to those queues.

(BTW Pushka, are you updating your ride with you to burkini wearers a la Nigella et al?) ;)

Thanks so much for your feedback and honesty - given me some things to consider. As to how the challenge came about - was talking to them on the phone about another matter and asked for options on a status match and I got a call back with an invitation for the status challenge. Thanks again.

Interesting. I've been trying to get a status challenge out of QFF for the past couple of months, but other than a call to request my statements from other programs (which I sent to them), I've heard nothing. In light of the recent VA changes I'm even more keen to move back to QF when I have an option, but the thought of months without even lounge access isn't very appealing. Also, I'm coming into the last few months of my QFF membership year, so there is a risk that SCs earned now will end up being worthless, as under the QFF system it's essentially all or nothing - unless you can get to 700 SC by the end of your membership year you might as well not bother. With a status challenge though, I'd start to book QF where possible right away, as I'd be pretty confident of making the 200 SCs within 90 days.
