(Main thread - Virgin Australia and Air NZ form new partnership - this thread is about QF's plan for NZd after this deal ends).

The ACCC agreement says NZ will end its codeshare agreement with QF if it's approved; I guess that doesn't necessarily mean QF can't continue to codeshare unilaterally on NZ domestic, or perhaps it's just happy to sell NZ codes.

Perhaps QF's expansion into AKL has soured the relationship.

I wonder if this means more JQ NZ?

In the end, they, (QF) still have JQNZd.
Its more so that VAi does not have any NZ airlines prior to their current agreement with AirNZ.
Realistically, I think that QF would be happier (financially), if all pax are feeded onto JQNZd, rather than AirNZ, as then all the revenue is kept in the QF fold, ie, no profit sharing with AirNZ.
As VAi does not have a NZ partner apart from the newly set up AirNZ one, maybe its fair.

Jit Connict:

All very well, but the text version of what the Captain said was ‘Quantas’….. Really????? Does the same consideration go into all facets of an aircraft’s flight preparations?????

This wouldn't be a huge loss given how expensive the QF/NZ coded flights are to most places.

I also can't see them reintroducing JQ to regional cities as they tried that experiment and it failed.

They would (most likely, (pure speculation)), put pax into AKL, and use JQNZd to move people to CHC/WLG/ZQN.

OffT: tho must say, its pity that Koru$ has a life of 4 years, its a very limiting term, did try to use it off set Aus - NZ fare, but the system would not allow it.
Bal of $130 or so NZ worth of Koru$, and I can only use it for seat selection on the 787.
Cant use it to off set fare.
OnT.

Currently the main CHC/WLG/ZQN to AKL flights operated by NZ but coded by QF are crazy priced and my guess is this is on purpose to keep people on QF metal with direct flights into those ports. The main benefit of the QF/NZ codes are smaller regional ports which they'd lose but I don't think that many book on them.

I've twice flown on QF coded NZ operated flights and whilst the Air NZ lounge staff are aware it didn't appear to be super common.

From https://www.qantas.com/en-au/where-we-fly/partner-airlines/air-new-zealand:

The partnership between Qantas and Air New Zealand will end on 7 April 2027. Qantas codeshare flights operated by Air New Zealand will no longer be available to book from this date.

If you're booked to travel before 7 April 2027, your booking will not be affected by this change, and eligible members can keep using Air New Zealand lounges.

If you're booked for travel on a Qantas codeshare flight operated by Air New Zealand on or after 7 April 2027, Qantas or your travel agent will update your itinerary to a flight with an Air New Zealand flight number. Qantas Frequent Flyer members will still earn the Qantas Points and Status Credits they would have earned on their original booking.

Qantas Classic Flight Reward seats will be available for booking until 6 April 2027.

Our partnership with Air New Zealand ends on 7 April 2027. From this date, if you need to change your Classic Flight Reward booking, you can contact us to rebook onto select Jetstar flights (subject to availability) or request a refund.

Our partnership with Air New Zealand ends on 7 April 2027. Until then, eligible members can continue to enjoy Air New Zealand lounges when travelling on eligible Air New Zealand domestic flights. From 7 April 2027, this lounge access will no longer be available.

I don't think there is such a thing as a "unilateral code share".

Not a massive loss and it appears Qantas will (and is currently) post 7 April continue to sell into regional NZ ports on Air NZ but with an NZ code. This won’t earn QF points/SCs or lounge access but means there is no loss of network. Costs are slightly higher but from a few searches nothing crazy.

Technically nothing stopping QF from saying that these post 7 April flights on NZ codes but 081 tickets could still earn. We’re currently seeing Alaska Airlines do the same with Breeze and Singapore airlines flights.

Can we expect the new VA/NZ partnership will start on 8 Apr 2027?
Possibly as the ACCC website lists January/February 2026 as Final Determination date which I assume it a typo and means Jan/Feb 2027.
https://www.accc.gov.au/public-regi...ter/virgin-australia-airlines-pty-ltd-and-ors. A draft decision is listed for November meaning in theory in 24 to 53 days we should know if this is a go.

All this is assuming the NZ Commerce Commission approves to a similar timeframe and as of right now Air NZ is still selling QF codes and the case hasn't appeared on their website. It wouldn't surprise me if the QF end date has happened faster because QF is close to or about to submit a response to the ACCC?
