Got one of my CD mixed cases from last week ( think it was the $140 mystery) - a wolf blass grey label shiraz 2016, chalambar shiraz, saltram 1859 shiraz 2022, coldstream hills reserve pinot 2020 so some half-decent stuff but dunno that it was a bargain. Then a bottle of flowerpot organic shiraz and something else i've forgotten - maybe another drumborg pinot?

edit; sorry it was a st peters not chalambar - i was in a hurry to move this one into the cellar today. So better value than i was saying before.

I was in a rush to post this up after moving into the cellar, it was a st peters not a chalambar. So i guess better than I was saying. WB grey, st peters, coldstream reserve isn't too bad and then 3 bottles of bbq/pizza wine. But yes not a crazy wynns icon box as a mystery deal.

The other pinot was a run riot NZ pinot. At least there's some stuff for a BBQ sometime

So I received this offer to purchase the little brother FU2 to the most iconic wine they sold at a massive 80% discount.

Apart from a peculiar winery name, I found even more peculiar the near perfect Robert Parker Wine advocate score of 99 points given to its bigger FU brother.

So on the winery website I learned that it is in fact true. Two vintages received the highest scores from Robert Parker Wine advocate

Digging a bit deeper I learned that Jay Miller left the WA abruptly in 2011 after the scandal alleging bribes for his reviews documented here and then here. In essence detailing arrangements made for Miller to visit Spanish wineries for a large fee. Apparently Miller's motto was "No Pay - No Jay" when it came to reviewing wines.

I guess the main take away for myself is to question EVERY review, (not just the Wine Orbit illustrious SK), but even the juggernauts like the Wine Advocate, whose reviews I used to take as Gospel.

The last original FU wine was 2008 made by R Wines and Chris Ringland. Years later and another company bought the name. It is in no way related or the same or any where as good. Beware inferior product trading on the name.

I don't know if the new owner of FU is associated with GWD, but for many years GWD or close associates bought struggling labels and made them their own. Normans, Viking, Colonial Estate, Songlines being the main ones of note. From my limited experience with various vintages of these they appear to be mostly lesser quality then the originals, in some cases a mere shadow of their former glory.

I really enjoyed some songlines wines about 15 years ago. Very nice back then. Haven't been back, which sounds like maybe that was lucky
