QF Upgrades - Successes or Failures (post results)

When did premium economy, usually Y+ (or even PE) become W? I’ve read W on a few threads recently, a new abbreviation as far as I am aware.

W is QF booking class for PE, just like J is for Business, been used interchangeably for as long as I can remember.

"W" is the bucket QF (and some others, but not all) use for full fare Premium Economy. Fits with J (Business), Y (Economy) and of course, First.

Y+ on the other hand can get confused with "extra legroom" seats in the eco cabin - but are NOT Premium Economy (ie same Y service). Most commonly it has been used to refer to UA''s Economy Plus nomenclature. Similiar products are AA Main Cabin Extra (MCE) and Delta' Comfort Plus. None of these are the same thing as a dedicated Premium Economy cabin so it can be confusing to use this when talking about Premium Economy.

Thank you. Possibly because I’ve never booked premium economy, I’ve never seen the bucket initials. And, of course, most of us on AFF would prefer to fly J, whether we can or not! 😊

I'm am booked domestic rededeal ( class e ) and want to use points to upgrade to J for 2 of us.
I would not like to be in the situation where one of us got the upgrade but not the other .
I'd like to request a points upgrade -
( when i did the original booking , paid J was some 750 dollars above the economy fare I booked so i did not go for it. Today the business fare on the same flight and date is only $180 above economy . I could wear that but I suspect that the only way i can make the change now would be to cancel the e fare and pay a penalty and separately purchase the J one.
So my question ,in the case of 2 requests , does the "system" only release and charge for the upgraded J seats when 2 are available or is there the risk that one may become available and points automatically deducted leaving one down the back .
No doubt , in that case , my partner will be up front and I'll be down with my granddaughters!

Can’t you start my telephoning QF to see if you can rebook in J by paying the difference between the current price and what you paid? Worth asking!

If on the same booking, then upgrades are processed for all pax, or none.

I imagine it could even be done online tbh. It would probably imcur the change fee of course.

Me and my wife (Both currently Gold) booked premium economy Melbourne to London (Economy to Perth followed by Premium Economy for the Perth to LHR leg). Soon after booking we applied for a points business upgrade for the Melbourne to Perth leg.

Much to our surprise 70 days before travel we got the upgrade.

In the past we have only found out about upgrades a few hours before flying, perhaps things are looking up since the new CEO?

No. Nothing to do with that.

Domestic upgrades are granted instantly when there is availability. It has been this way for years.

International works differently and with defined windows by status for upgrade processing within a week prior to departure.

Congrats on the domestic upgrade!

QF Platinum here, myself and a no status family member are traveling on QF75 tomorrow on seperate bookings.
I requested upgrade from premium economy to business for both of us via my account at almost exactly the same time from my account.
I received an upgrade at T-72, however my +1 still now at T-24 has received nothing.

I don't currently have expert flyer so couldn't watch the loads, however there were 10 business seats available when I received my upgrade (after T80 so the blocked seats had opened) and it stayed that way until earlier today at approx T-36 most the seats filled up, which I assume was another tranche of upgrades. I understand that seat maps aren't an accurate representation of the loads for a variety of reasons but I believe it was good enough to notice when the upgrades went through.
The upgrade system works in mysterious ways! Now I have to explain to said family member that they will be alone in PE while I am up the front 😂

Just for extra data: My ticket was booked direct with QF, the family member booked with Amex travel.
