E79th near 2nd Ave. I made a mistake on arrival and should have exited the Q train at the 86th St. station - the Southern escalators there are so long you come up at 83rd street.

Nice!

I always enjoy a pizza from Numero 28 (E74th and 1st) on arrival, followed by breakfast and coffee at Maison Kayser the next morning (E74th and 3rd corner). And the 2nd Ave deli - on E75th and 1st.

Day 4: 6118 steps

Due to yesterday's rain out, I tried to work a way to recover the planned shopping from the day before, but I really did not have sufficient time to get out to where I needed.

I headed to Manhattan's Herald square area mid morning and have a look around to see if I could find anthying I was interested in - the place was starting to get busy.

A look around Macy's, JC Penny and a few other places were fruitless in relation to clothing. Anything I would have purchased was simply more expensive than I could get back in Australia. I did get a pair of polarized sunglasses for USD3.99 from Jack's (of course that came with 35¢ tax to make US$4.44 or AU$6.10).

I returned around 1pm, as I was heading out mid afternoon for a look at the CBS New York news facility.

I did some housekeeping, before joining my host for Lyft to the lower Westside.

We have a friend from FT who has been working for CBS in the news area for 35 years - he is actually has two Emmy award statues in his home.

He took us on a tour of the facility, the history was fascinating. They were preparing for that evening's Saturday magazine style new bulletin. This took about three hours and basically showed that media these days is data - studious comprise about 5% of the space; production and distribution the rest.

The building is an old dairy with rail tracks in the basement. In days gone past, milk was shunted in in bulk for processing.

I could not take photos in many places and some came out blurry. Here is a shot of the main hallway through centre of the building - in the above are ducts with cabling layered to over 4' deep. Lore is the cabling as set out layer upon layer over decades now forms part of the structure of the building.

Returning around 7:30pm, we went out to a nearby Italian restaurant where we had a meal of mixed quality, unlike the company.

With that it was back to my accommodation and sleep.

Day 5: 5713 steps

Next morning, we were out at 9:30am to collect a rental car. Until recently, my host had a car garaged nearby but decided the ongoing cost compared with actual use did not justify it. We drove in the rental car out to New Jersey for the Cowboy's at Giants game. With a forecast max temp of 4°C I did take the Heavy (with detachable liner attached) coat and a solid baseball type suede cap. I later found this combination did not help keep the tips of my ears from feeling the cold.

On the way we stopped of at a gas station for 3 gallons of fuel - I offered to pay. There was an automated pump, but the card amount needed pre-authorisation - I had to put my postcode in with a leading zero for this to work.

My host had a 'club' membership which gave access to an extensive lounge where food abd drinks could be purchased.

There was also come complimentary food - this day it was a small bowl of chilli as well as some crisps and "crackerjacks". I purchased a Diet Pepsi - large - USD7 for about a pint.

We went to our erserved seats just before the game was to start (it was cold outside).

The game itself was interesting, not that you'd have thought so at the half. A 35-34 win to Dallas. More on that here:

With the game over and the Giants managing to improve their draft prospects by snatching defeat from the jaws of victory it was time to head back to Manhattan.

My Coat had done its job ...

A 30 minute drive saw us dropping the car off and heading back to the Apartments. We had some delivered Thai food and watched the later games with the last one not finishing until nearly midnight EST.

From there it was off to bed for hopefully a good sleep before my upcoming big news years eve odyssey.
