I have an issue with this, big time. Where is my right to privacy? Why does some buffoon have the right to go through my text messages and private pictures and video? Just like I don't give my name or date of birth away willy nilly, I don't like giving away my personal thoughts and dreams to just anyone because the government says so.

What if they don't like what they see, even though it's legal, so they manage to drag you through courts for years trying to pursue charges? Who pays for that? Me? I'm not paying for a government bureaucrat to get their power trip on.

Happily provide all itinerary, employment, bank details etc. Everything I need to, to prove I am who I say I am and am doing what I say I'm doing. Not happy for them to peek around my private life because they feel like it.

Just to add, I get swabbed 90% of the time on flights. I carry CASA approved (but not well known) equipment which causes swabs/pat downs regularly. Don't have an issue with it. Always allow extra time and comply politely. I get the point of security, even if it could be argued it's a charade, but don't think they have a right to my personal life.

I think if they have reasonable suspicion of a serious crime then it should be okay, otherwise they should back off.

The smart terrorists will keep their plans off technology anyway.

'Disappointing': Border force training school blasted in official report
The multimillion-dollar college that trains Australia’s border security personnel has “overpromised and underdelivered” and immigration and customs officials have repeatedly abused their powers, a scathing report has found.

And here is why they have those powers:

Malaysian to be deported after child exploitation discovery at Gold Coast Airport
A Malaysian man will be deported after child exploitation material was found on his phone at Gold Coast Airport when he arrived on a flight from his homeland last year.

Sei Wei Lau, 28, was arrested by Australian Border Force investigators on October 11 after landing and a search of his luggage led to child exploitation material being found on his phone

My only concern would be abuse of power when you get some he-man who thinks a pretty young thing is cute and he removes private data (ie, her phone number or address) to harass her later on. Anyone that rolls their eyes and says thats not going to happen, abuse of power happens everywhere, especially in the US where the underpaid, under educated and full of self imposed militia power reign.

Good luck with mine. I hate Trump, support equal rights for all and post a lot of food pics.

This is a huge issue in nightclubs where your licence is scanned and kept in perpetuity. The bouncers know who to follow up with later.

Glad I'm past the age of attending these places.

Or she-girl?

One particular organisation I work with no longer allows their staff to carry their corporate laptops to the US. They will instead ship a laptop to your destination from the closest US office pre-loaded with your profile and you drop it off at the closest office (or ship it back) when you're done with it.

I personally wipe any confidential data from my devices before travelling overseas. I can access it remotely over VPN if needed. I need to be able to provide assurances to my clients that data has not left my possession and if I'm required to provide access to encrypted data to a border official then I'm no longer able to provide that assurance.

Personal data won't glean anything interesting. It's mostly just photos of food, travel, and my cat.

I won't do that either, which is a problem living in the city where every bar requires a scan after 9pm (not just nightclubs - but they've never been my thing). It was easily solved though. My friends and I would head back to my apartment instead if we needed to change venues (eg: post dinner drinks).

In any case, drinks at my place beat just about any rooftop bar (not to mention being cheaper and with less people too). There's a reason why I host a NYE soiree every year :)

Great view. Note to self: Check messages for invite to Ewing's NYE soiree. :)

Thanks for this Hvr. As a retired Customs Officer, luckily before Border Force, that was a very interesting report in The Age. But, I still feel too close to the subject to want to discuss it on-line.

However, seeing the Ruritanian Admirals uniforms favoured by senior staff these days is dismaying. It all falls back to the problem of ambitious politicians, on both sides, wanting to aggrandise themselves and have plenty of photo-opps.

This sounds like a very good annual AFF meeting. Can we make this official?

Privacy is becoming just a platitude. USA has the constitutional 4th amendment (which guarantees privacy of the person, houses, papers and effects) but successive governments there have intruded upon their own citizens without cause or warrant.

We have been on the slippery slope toward an all seeing and all knowing governance. A bit late to complain now??

I've always wondered what would happen if my laptop or phone is out of battery. Less likely on my phone but I often work on my laptop until the battery dies on the plane (I use that as a cue to say I've done enough) and the charger is at my office/home office (at both ends). Will they supply one or will they just copy everything on my laptop.

Looking at it under my supervision (I would politely request that the screen is visible to me while they are looking, I will not interfere) is fine. Copying data or writing down information from the screen is not unless something was wrong.

I believe they need to search bags with you in front of them and not hidden away so the same applies to searching my electronic device.

Firstly, I'm sure they would have charging options available. Universal chargers are common.

Secondly, they don't need to turn it on to take a copy of your hard drive. Open it up and just mirror the hard drive. Easy peasy.

I think you'd be surprised (or perhaps not!) of the things I can complain about....
