A nightmare transfer at CDG - did I have any other options?

I recently flew ZAG-CDG-BKK in J on OU and then TG (same itinerary and PNR - 3 hour transit in CDG)

In ZAG (OU's hub), they checked my baggage all the way to BKK but said they could only issue me my first ZAG-CDG boarding pass and I needed to collect my next boarding pass in CDG.

When I arrived at CDG I looked for a *A transfer desk (there were none). I asked at the information desk and they said I needed to get the boarding pass at the gate. I went to the *A lounge in the hope they could print out my boarding pass and they told me the same thing as the info desk (and wouldnt allow me access to the lounge without a boarding pass).

Trying to get through security without an onwards boarding pass was fun - the security staff almost refused to let us through to the gate. When we got to the gate, of course there were no TG staff to be seen. When we asked the neighbouring *A service desk for assistance (I think it was LX or SQ) they told us they couldnt print it and we needed to wait until the TG staff arrived, which was not until boarding commenced (90 minutes away).

Very frustrated, we ended up entering the country, going to the check-in desk land-side to collect our boarding pass for which the check-in girl was mystified as to why we were checking in for a flight when our luggage was already checked through. Naturally, TG had given away our pre-assigned seats to someone else in the time we wasted touring the various parts of CDG looking for this bloody boarding pass.

We finally got the damn thing and headed through immigration. The stamp on our passport was barely dry from entering the country barely 20 minutes before so once again we received mystified looks and questions from staff. We wasted approx 80 minutes from the time of exiting our OU aircraft to the time we entered the CDG *A lounge with our boarding pass.

This was a nightmare experience - if OU had printed our TG boarding pass we would have saved well over an hour of stuffing around. I know not every airline can print boarding passes for other airlines (although TG had no problem printing my TK boarding pass outside its hub), but this is a warning to anyone needing to collect a boarding pass in CDG - its not a matter of just finding the nearest service/transfer desk (I guess because no *A carriers are based there). Should I have handled this any differently?

Did your luggage make it? AF managed to lose my bag for 3 days on my last transit through CDG.

Sounds like a nightmare. I will be heading to CDG next year, but fortunately as a destination, not a transit.

There are two airports I try to avoid like the plague.. CDG & LAX. This is a timely reminder as to why. Sorry to hear about your experience. It's one of those awful finger pointing situations too :-|

Same happened to me transferring CDG-ATH-JTR. TG couldn't print forward BP's, had to wait for check in to open and our luggage never made it until the next day. I don't think I'd ever transfer through CDG again.

We had a similar experience with being unable to obtain BPs earlier this year, en route from Jordan to Oz, transferring from AF to SQ at CDG. Much time and energy was wasted in trying to find a way to do what should have been a simple straightforward task.
No problem with lounge access, however, and the staff there were brilliant with the rest of their service, even if they could not help with the BPs.

I've never had a good experience at CDG. There's always some delay or stuffup, and all too often the response is a shrug, delivered after a long wait in a queue.

I sometimes think it is up to the knowledge of the checkin person.

Travelling in USA sometimes the AA checkin (eg one time out of Chicago) tell me that they cannot give me a QF boarding pass for my onward flight. I have worked out that it is just laziness or inability. To give AA credit, usually they do give me all QF boarding passes.

I have had lufthansa in Europe tell me that they can't give me a boarding pass for my next LH flight because because it is a separate booking. Both were European "schengen' area flights. Again I put this down to laziness or inability.

It may well be that OU don't have an IATCI (inter airline through checkin) agreement with TG ie you won't get boarding passes. Airlines OU & TG may still have a baggage agreement hence bags being through checked to BKK.

The only other thing I'd suggest if transitting CDG is to OLCI for TG if that option is available so you can just head direct to the lounge next time.

If you'd stayed airside & waited for TG staff to turn up for boarding it may well have been too late as they would most likely have closed the flight & you would have been a 'noshow'.

Just because you checked in bags with OU ZAG/CDG/BKK doesn't mean TG in CDG know you're travelling.

It was a goid thing you did go landside when you did or it could've ended in tears.

Good advice, ozbeachbabe.
In our case, transferring to SQ, we couldn't do online check in when we discovered the impossibility of obtaining BPs - I think because it was too close to flight time by then, but it could have been some other wrinkle.

Next time, will bear your advice in mind at the point of departure of the first flight, when onward BPs are not available. Thanks for the reminder of that option.
