Luggage Lottery in LAX, need advice.

Hi Everyone, again apologies from the noob, I am after some seasoned LAX travellers advice.

Heading to the US in June, and flying MEL-LAX then onward to ORD.
The flight from MEL-LAX will either be in Y or J and I will be a SG by then.

I will be travelling with 2 Cases and 3 large boxes, each luggage sized and each weighing no more than 23kg each.

Qantas has arranged for the luggage to be no charge on the QF legs, but cant help on AA. The guy I have been dealing with at QF has been really, really helpful, so no complaints from our end here in Aussie land.

But what happens when I am in the good ol US of A?

Ill be booking a separate ticket from LAX to ORD (YUPP/KUPP) and I am assuming that check-in in Melbourne will check me in all the way thru to ORD.

Last two times I’ve been to LAX I’ve exited with no connections, the time before from memory I just put my bags on a conveyor belt and that’s the last I saw of them, no rechecking luggage in or anything similar and I picked them up at the other end.

So my questions are:

A) if I am checked all the way thru will I “get away” with it?
B) Do you re-checkin your bags after clearing customs?
C) Can you pay in advance for excess baggage? – does my SG + YUPP/KUPP mean anything as in will I get an extra bag?

Thanks in advance

Ryan

You'll most likely have to suck it up and pay the fee.

Paid an excess fee in Feb on AA, it wasn't to huge and the AA check in girl was sympathetic to me about my girlfriends binge.

If you are going for work and taking something then it won't worry you I would presume as they would be paying. If paying yourself then sometimes the postal system is a better way to get something through, and you don't have to carry it yourself.

Sadly I am paying, this isnt a work trip at all. The 3 boxes are rather sensetive, not expensive or anything like that, they just need to travel with me, and i certainly cant post them. (If curiosity killed the cat, here is what is in the boxes, and promise not to laugh: Full cutaway interior on Flickr - Photo Sharing! )

But its a one way 3 boxes only, they wont be returning, or flying on any of my other internal flights, just got to get them from MEL to ORD.

A) Generally this is the case
B) No, it's as the conveyor drop you described
C) Travelling in First gets 'free' luggage, so does SG (OWS) but if A) is tru then C) is irrelevant.

Ill be booking a separate ticket from LAXLos Angeles, CA to ORD - O'Hare (YUPP/KUPP) and I am assuming that check-in in Melbourne will check me in all the way thru to ORD - O'Hare.
Make sure you have printed copies of all e-tickets for your journey when checking in MEL.

They should be able to check your bags all the way through and even issue you with ORD BP's.

Perhaps even get the guy you have been dealing with to put your AA segments into your Qantas PNR as information segments so it's there when the agent digs your booking up.

WOW! How long did that take to make?

Awesome!

Mr!

Started April last year, and finished over the christmas break, rainy days weekends etc, its a family project but turned out great, taking it over to the worlds largest show to show the Yanks how us Aussies do it :)

I recall seeing this in the press recently ReLoad...and it's brilliant!

I reckon if the agents saw what it was, then being airline people they'd want to let it all go through free! But, who knows. Best of luck with the showing.

Cheers, and for the record, Ralph and Lisa Robinson did make an appearance in it, but not during public show  and in an MA 15+ timeslot :)

Once i got hold of the right person at QF they were really supportive in helping me get it Stateside, so looking good, nice one QF :)

I am going to blog the journey of getting it over there, and its flying over on an A380 so thats a great start :)
