I'm not sure whether you've forgotten about Jetstar NZ, or whether you're excluding it because QF is not a "major foreign airline"?

Jetstar isn't eating into their market, they serve just a handful of domestic destinations in NZ compared to ANZ, and no Qantas isn't a major foreign airline. Maybe I should have qualified it further with cash rich government owned foreign airline to make the differentiation clearer.

Now if Qantas was was running Jetstar domestic NZ at a loss for the sole purpose to eat away at ANZ market share and if ANZ was an private (not government owned) company that had restrictions on foreign ownership and cash injection you would have a point.

The CNS crew are some of the best ones in the QF network. I think most came from the old Australian (international) experiment. It was one of the best quality airlines around before they closed it down.

I wonder if part of the problem is the loss of the singapore hub?

I don't know why one LHR service doesn't still go via SIN. We used to have (in the good ol' days) simultaneous arrivals from MEL/SYD/ADL/PER/BNE that would all connect each way with the London plane.

My thought then was that each of those flights to SIN could be used to fly to a third destination... HKG/BKK/MNL/NRT/DPS. Essentially giving every capital city in Australia a one-stop service to every capital city in Asia (essentailly creating a DXB hub in SIN for QF with a half dozen destinations).

The trade-off of course being fewer non-stops, but plenty of people are nappy now to transit SIN/BKK/HKG on other carriers anyway).

Of course, that is partly why PER-SIN services did so poorly. Removal of the LHR connection would have turned quite a few off

We don't want to use Emirates nor Dubai and the run PER-SIN-LHR is the way we want and will do that run.
Yes that change was not well received by our family so we will go with SQ until the stupid stuff gets reversed.

How major was the ANZ restructure compared to what is going on at QF currently?

For a start.

1. Nationalised, with NZ government having about 75%, now down to 50 something.
2. Job cuts of 1000 out of 9000 (so 11% compared to Qantas at 15% today).
3. 10% reduction in flying.
4. Wage cuts.
5. Corporate restructure.
6 Off shoring of some elements of maintenance.
7. Conversion of NZ domestic and short haul international to essentially LCC type operation, no business class.
8. Offshore crew bases.

Yep Virgin, good point, now tell me where does Virgin Australia fly to internationally? Yep much much less destinations compared to Qantas.

Actually from Perth, they fly to coughet 3x weekly and Bali 9x weekly. That's more than QF which now only has 2x weekly to AKL.

AKL is only seasonal and not currently running. Eventually it will be down to 0x weekly from PER.

Can they just get on with dropping the Q and NT from their name and replacing with S(ydney) and M(elbourne) to give a true reflection of ports serviced? How would you all feel flying SAMAS?

The writing was on the wall for the remaining PER-SIN service when the EK alliance was formed and QF LHR services were directed via DXB. Loads on the PER-SIN route were good prior to that. I would think there will be pressure on the BNE-SIN route in the future for the same reason.

As someone who travels PER-SIN-PER at least five times a year, I do not know what I am going to do after 12 May. No WP/P1 benefits apply on 3K and the 3K status credits do not contribute to the P1 QF SC earn requirement either.

I will most likely have to switch to SQ and go for the QF/VA platinum double rather than just P1 on QF. The positive is I will not have to fly on the substandard EK J flights out of PER to Europe.

Once upon a time BA (ex-SIN) code shares on SIN-PER-SIN were priced at a small premium (in the economy cabin) when compared with the QF fare. I would have assumed that makes up for BA having to pay QF and still earn a commission on the flight.

Earlier this year, BA standalone fares became available only in the fully flexible B and Y class ranges. Almost double the QF flex fares. I would venture QF lost a few BIS flyers as a result. I wonder who sparked the fare class changes - QF or BA?

And AY and JL code shares would seem to have a limited audience in Perth. Except perhaps for the energy sector.

If QF is not interested in a internationally configured 738/320 maybe BA???? Pity the flight times SIN-PER would make a double turn very difficult with only one plane. But even so, many airlines would consider 11 hours/day in the air utilization acceptable.

JQ isn't part of Qantas, it is part of the Qantas Group.

Small subtle difference. So you can delete that list as it isn't relevant.

I'd rather an EK 777 in J than QF 333 in J....

I doubt that Qlink will be affected by these changes. Sunstate and Cobham are different companies.

Tony Abbott plays down possibility of Qantas debt guarantee

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Mr Abbott declared he believed the national carrier should have a ‘‘level playing field’’ but signalled his government has cooled on giving a debt guarantee to the airline, despite foreshadowing such a move in recent weeks.

The Prime Minister said that while the government was determined Qantas could compete on a level playing field, ‘‘what we do for one business, in fairness, we have to make available to all businesses’’.
