27th February Big Qantas announcement

Been following the news on Sky this morning and news isn't as bad as I thought it'd be. A few points I've found interesting;

No changes or "enhancements" mentioned to QFF.
The Labour party/greens considering changes to the QSA in that a foreign airline may own more than the current 25% share of QF.
Axing of the PER-SIN route. This just hands these customers to SQ on silver platter. Maybe and EK PER-SIN-DBX route in the future?

Listening to the political fallout now.

For those comparing nz and qf remember that the entire nz A320 operation is basically operated like jetstar with no frills service and pay for extras. Also lower paid crews. So if you are going to compare route networks you should include JQ international with QF international

I've got a booking for 2nd week of June PER-SIN rtn QF direct (QF77/78) but unsure if this is still scheduled or canx? Announcement suggests QF withdrawing from route 1st quarter 2014-2015, but these flights are missing from booking engine well before that.
I assume I'll hear from Qantas over the next few days if my flights are gone.....
Could have been worse I guess.

I'd be insisting on some pretty significant compensation. Absolutely no JQ. If you're interested in SQ, insist on that. If you're happy to go interstate, route through Sydney or Melbourne and insist on lounge passes.

So I get put on a JQ flight for 2 of my flights. Do I get a complimentary meal, blanket, pillow, full luggage allowance etc? I'm guessing not... Maybe it's time to cancel instead.

Do not accept that, would be my suggestion.

Actually you are incorrect here, SQ don't offer 3 flights per day on PER-SIN.

They offer 4 flights per day. The fourth, added last year, may have been the nail in the coffin for the QF services.

Are you serious? 4 flights a day from PER-SIN?!! That's how long I haven't flown SQ out of PER... trying to support QF... Hmmm... where have I been? Waking up at 5:30am... to rush to the airport and hop onto the 9am service out of PER to SIN. And in April that service is changing to 8am! That will mean I have to wake up one hour earlier (4:30am) just to fly QF... and for what??? Why keep WP status when there are no QF international flights from PER?? LOL

It's a no brainer to fly SQ with 4 options out of PER.

Don't they make more money off their store than on points spent on their flights anyway? So if you want them to stay in business it's actually a good choice.

488K points turns into $3,500 of gift cards.

I was saving the points for planned trip to the US next year (2 adults, 2 kids).

Bookings aren't open for April yet, but doing a dummy booking for Feb BNE-LAX to keep it simple I get:

Cash: $4863
Classic: 384K points + $3,302 (wow, some great value there!)
ASA: 488K + $1389

Comparing the ASA to the Cash fare, my 488K points are getting me the equivalent of ... wait for it ... $3,500. Based on that I'd say QF make more money from ASAs (and definitely from classic awards) that they do from selling gift vouchers.

What has I missed....

I got to work already to watch it all unfold and then customers kept coming and seeing me.

Big shock to get rid of PER-SIN, unbelievable, I guess it didn't help when they moved the timings so far forward to loose any decent connections, accept with Jetstar who had a flight at a similar time.

My understanding is that all non-refurb 747s will go next month, so what will operate the SYD-HKG-SYD sectors on those few days, and will my F ticket in April have me travelling in J...? Let's hope they handle the fallout well.

The opposition is putting up an absolutely pathetic show on TV at the moment blaming the government.

QF's issue is grandfathered IR agreements which see ridiculous wages and stupid conditions such as a quota of vegetables in pilot's meals (WTF?!?!). They are far too expensive to run and frankly it was only a question of time until 5,000 or more jobs went. Hopefully they get rid of the old dead wood on ridiculously unsustainable EBAs.

So the announcement of less than three hours ago that it would be the first quarter of 2014/15 is wrong. Well, well. Who would have thought you couldn't trust a QF media release.

The announcement said Q1 FY14-15, which is July.

OT for this thread but there are ways to get much better value than what you are talking about.

TRhe announcement said Q1 FY15, which is July.

Correct. But as the media release said "Qantas International will withdraw from the Perth-Singapore route from 12 May 2014 [emphasis added] . . ." May is before July and is in the current financial year, not the next.

Correct. But as the media release said "Qantas International will withdraw from the Perth-Singapore route from 12 May 2014 [emphasis added] . . ." May is before July and is in the current financial year, not the next.

However, QF are operating some ad-hoc PER-SIN flights in July 2014 before withdrawing completely so technically the media release is correct.

Not 2015. It's the first quarter of 2014/15 meaning it will be gone by the end of September. In fact, a check of the schedules reveals 21 July is the death day for QF international in Perth.

Looks like 12 May 2014 is the end of the PER-SIN QF route.

Can anyone suggest any reason at all why I should keep flying QF to keep my status? What's the point when no international flights from PER?

What's going to happen to the JAL codeshare between Tokyo and PER with a transit in SIN? JAL operate a QF codeshare from Tokyo-SIN, then its QF from SIN to PER.

As one of the potential 5000 staff to go, I just want to say this morning has been quite full on – I think the note to mention is no one would have got the sack today, they are just saying to each level they will inform people in time. So it will be drawn out even longer.

But all I will say is most of us are shocked Joyce isn’t putting his hand up – he sacks 5000 people and yet he keeps his job. A lot of the factors the airline can control are the responsibility of the board and CEO – they have both failed and yet the workers are the ones that suffer. The press conference was embarrassing – great question from Ross Greenwood about Joyce’s future (swatted away nicely) and the one about the venue for the press conference was even better. And the lack of answers given was really just showing how poorly we as an airline are managed right now – and yet they keep their jobs.
