Hi Guys,

travelling to do a trip around the shiny parts of asia in April and would like to know what you guys think. Just qualified as WP so take that into consideration please :)

Currently Booked as per below:
10th April - QF128 - SYD-HKG Y+
10th April - CX402 - HKG-TPE Y
15th April - CX495 - TPE-HKG Y
19th April - CX635 - HKG-SIN Y+
21st April - QF6 - SIN-SYD Y+

I have limited points due to some JASA award flights I booked in Jan, so would only be able to upgrade
one of the QF flights to Business. Would you chose 128 which is a day flight on the A380 to truly enjoy Business, or QF6 the night flight for a good nights rest. Currently the config on seat selection for QF6 is showing an un-refurb 747 so would mean the angled lie flat seat...

Also, what lounges in HKG/TPE would you recommend?

Thanks,

Shan

for me i would upgrade on qf6 for night flight.

Apart from the jaunt to TPE (and minus the stop over in BNE), it looks pretty similar to a trip I did last year.

For my trip, I did J for the SYD-HKG leg. That said, if I had a choice, I'd have probably chosen J for the SIN-SYD, since that would give me something to look forwards to. That said an o'night J flight there is a degree of missing out on some of the J service, since most ppl will want to go to sleep pretty early on, and the "cafe" brekky is nothing to write home about.

Given limited points, I would upgrade QF6 since I prefer to sleep on a night flight to copious amounts of space on a day flight.

Note that QF6 is normally an A330 which would be Mk1 Skybeds anyway.

I would say 128, QF6 is a flight you basically want to sleep on, if you stay up for the meals, you're lucky to get maybe 4hrs sleep, so the benefit of the J Experience is somewhat lost. Plus 128 is longer!

Lounges in TPE???? There is only one, the CX one, with others operated by third parties likely resulting in no access.

I'd also go with the points upgrade on 127.

A380, daytime flight, longer than the 6, enjoy the J experience.
QF6 isn't so long and quite do-able in Y, even overnight.

Having done both recently I would choose outbound (actually QF127 I think) for the reasons above. If hell bent on using points could always apply for QF6 upgrade if QF127 unsuccessful - where QF6 metal has not changed to an A330 (no PE anyway) they are using the four class 747s (currently on April 21) which are not too bad if were able to select the downstairs forward cabin seats (first class lie flat used as business).

As far as lounges in HKG the Wing but depending on time can always try more!

If QF6 is actually a non refurb 747 and is showing a very light J load (and above mentioned F seats are showing as empty), I would go that one and hope as WP you are likely to be first opped up and able to nab an F seat with J service.....

that was a mouthful..... :-)

Thanks Guys, mixed bag of results in terms of upgrade!

If QF6 stays as a non-refurb 747, I think it might be better to stay in Y+ to avoid the slipping of the seat and just using the extra recline to get a couple of hours sleep.

As for lounges, the Wing in HK Seems like the best bet?

Absolutely. Find a nice comfy chair in the Champagne lounge live it up.

We tried it last year - really enjoyed it and the food and Peninsula chocolates on the buffet :)

I have found Mk 1 or MK 2 to be no different on ex SIN flights, the experience is so dependent on crew getting the service done and ditching the lights. In fact the best trip from 8 last year was grabbing back row of four in Y and having the service done within an hour of takeoff, it was stellar. Luckily being BNE based we have the EK 1AM arrival option, will take it anyday and sleep when I get home while its dark.

I'm on QF 107 SYD - JFK later in the year. I'm in Y+ trying for a J points upgrade (no status)
Even thoughts a day flight the key for me is that I want to try and get some good rest so I can enjoy the holiday. I went last year to HNL in J on a old 767. Didn't get much rest on the flight and was so coughpy for the first few days.

Also recently came back from HKG on CX in Y+ and also didn't get much sleep (too many movies) although this was a night flight. Was again coughpy for a day or so.

My point is if you are affected by jet lag as I am you may want to go for the upgrade on the way over to maximise rest even thought its a day flight.
but as others have said as a WP you are good chances of an OPUP but that's never to be banked on.

First question I would be asking is have you travelled long haul J before? If no, then the answer if clear to me and try the upgrade on the day flight 128 to HKG, you will get to experience the whole J service (well not as good as F ;) ) but still a good experience. If the answer is yes, then I would still go for the upgrade to HKG and start off your holiday a little bit more refreshed, a little bit more happier (than having to be stuck in Y+). Whereas on the way back home, arrive home less refreshed, less happier but you can do post-travel recovery in your luxurious bed :D
