has anyone had any recent experience of whether Delta will check you thru onto a VA flight if they are on separate tickets, i.e. JFK-LAX (DL) then LAX-BNE (VA)?

I understand Delta used to be more flexible but may have tightened up on their policy lately.

Even on the same ticket with Delta there can be problems.

Recently I flew back from JFK to SYD via LAX on a VA ticket and both sectors having VA flight numbers. At the JFK check-in Delta said they couldn't give me a boarding pass for the LAX-SYD flight and that I would have to check-in at LAX.

Knowing the inconvenience of having to go through security again and knowing that there was the airside shuttle from T5 to T3 I stood my ground and argued the matter with the check-in person at JFK. Eventually she agreed to contact her supervisor who cleared up the matter and I was given my LAX-SYD boarding pass.

I had a similar situation on the same route and same ticketing at the JFK DL SkyPriority Check-in. The agent first wanted to charge me for my bags, then wanted to deny me my Plat baggage allowance of 3 bags. I stood my ground and it all got sorted, as it was on one ticket and I knew what I was supposed to get. I had to go to VA in LAX to get my BPs and lounge invite, which wasn't too much trouble. Luckily the baggage was sorted as we had 10 hours in LA and VA check in doesn't open till 3:30PM.

Yes my experience was at the JFK FL SkyPriority Check-in too. I don't think the DL check-in staff there in NY are that bright!

Was told by Delta in MIA recently that they can check luggage through to the VA connection only if the next flight is within 12 hours.

DL staff at LAS were happy to check baggage through on a separate ticket -- couldn't issue boarding cards, but no problem with using the airside terminal transfer at LAX and collecting my boarding card for the VA flight from the customer service desk thingy at T3.
