Is this a valid strategy for getting cheaper one way fares or do the airlines already have this idea covered?

One way fares seem to be around 75%+ of the cost of a return flight. Could you purchase a return flight (one leg fully refundable) and cancel the unwanted leg at a later date?

If it's a destination you have a chance of revisiting or using maybe you could book a long way in the future?

Buying an cancellling means you pay 100% of the return flight, still more expensive than 75%?

Still usually cheaper in Europe to buy a return ticket between two cities and then just not turn up for the 2nd one...

My neighbour wants to relocate to Vietnam, for the dates and times she wants it's cheaper to book a return than a one-way, and I reckon she'll do that and just throw away the return.

try airline search engines from countries other than australia... occasionally they offer one way fares that that equate to half the price of the return fare....they do come up, and I believe it has something to do with the way the airlines offload some (not all)of there seats..I got a one way fare from JFK to LHR on FlightNetwork.com on british airways that I couldn't get any where else (for 1/2 return price)

She could always book the return to come back for Xmas or some other important event just in case she could attend.

Alternatively if there was a max stay of 6 months in Vietnam, book the last day possible just ad back up in case you need it.
