has anyone tried the samosas?? are they any good?

I've been meaning to post a review but keep forgetting.

There's 8 in the box, and they're the usual $5.99 so it doesn't seem good value, but they are big.

I had my usual taste testers try them and the verdict was a good flavour, strong curry taste and a kick of spice that didn't seem to linger too long. For me, I again found them mild, but later found out one of the ladies found hers much too hot (spicy).

As with all samosas, the insides are going to be hot (temperature) so don't burn your mouth!

Perhaps the biggest detraction for me was the pastry. I like a crisp, light pastry, but didn't get that. The box said 15 minutes in the oven but they didn't look golden brown enough by then - and pasty white samosas don't exactly make you confident.

I've got another box so shall try leaving them longer in the oven, however the chilli con Carne is still winning it from my perspective.

If you had the crochettes in week 1 you'll find the samosas have about the same flavour intensity (so they're probably tied for second so far IMO).

We just tried them for lunch. Certainly spicy. I found the pastry tough but perhaps that was our cooking. Tasted OK but we think the frozen Select Lamb Samosas in Woolworths are better. We are not vegetarian so that's not an issue. I won't be buying them again. I did buy another Chilli that was still sitting there from 2 weeks ago as we enjoyed that. Next week desserts!

......Next day...So much for the Lamb Samosas in WW. That section in the Freezer now has some US made samosas including such appetising flavours as Jalapeno and Cheese and.............................Pizza Toppings (yes inside the samosas.

When is it taco seasoning week?

There's something which probably applies to a lot of the recipes but particularly struck me the last two weeks since there are a lot of sauces.

What it tastes like when it's finished being made and what it takes like after sitting around for a while are often quite different. For some sauces you keep that's often what you want, since the flavours mellow out. For something like chimichurri it isn't, and normally only keeps for a day or two, including from the look of it the one he made. I think there are variants that do keep in bottles, but they have different recipes and taste quite different.

I wonder how many alterations need to be made to the recipes of the winner after the show: to add preservatives, alter the flavour balance to deal with being frozen or stored in a bottle/jar for ages, and all that kind of stuff.

I'm sure that's why the format wont change this season (if there's to be another season or not, who knows) because the lead time had to be so long. It'd be great if we could place when exactly an episode was filmed to see just how long ago it was, but I'm guessing the first batch (when there's 3 contestants) can be used for the next stage, and then the winner starts completely from scratch, probably with little control over where they go next.

Tonights episode featured:

  1. [-]Sticky date jars - a sticky date pudding, but served in a jam jar[/-] - Unfortunately, first to disappear somehow.
  2. [-]Kat's Scruffies - the leftover skins of apples, wrapped in dough to make a dumpling[/-] - At the final hurdle, the launch and branding was deemed better, but the product weaker than the winner.
  3. (OMG) Sweet Billies - chocolate cookies with chocolate filling - Deemed to be a weaker brand and product launch, but better product.

As usual, they encountered the usual issues in the chefs kitchen. Lots of mistakes and contestants getting a bit over ambitious. At the marketing point of the show it was pointed out to one contestant that there was already a brand on the market called OMG, so she had to rebrand, and I don't think she did as well with the new name.

I'd like the sticky date puddings but they would be too expensive as a one unit glass purchase.

Just waiting on the winner now. Hope it's the cookies.

This is really silly. Woolies will do the branding so why is there even an issue of picking the stronger brand?

Ok. 76 % would buy one of the products and 96% would the other. Why was there even a discussion.

I will be buying them though. Blow the diet. :p

I can't recall them mentioning numbers when they discussed percentages, but from the looks of things, more people tried the scruffies than the failed brand/launch of the cookies, so 76% could still represent more people :p

Look forward to the reports in tomorrow ;)

Yes, more people tried the scruffies but if you can get the other product out to more people then that almost guarantees more sales. I'm also not too sure how those scrufies would taste after storage.

I'll let you know how it goes. :)

The price will be interesting given its a box of four cookies.

I think the price for the sticky date one serves would also have been prohibitive.

It seems the price is around $4.95 for most items on the show. So if that's the case, then around $1.20 a cookie. Luxury item I guess.

$7 for four cookies, what a joke.

I was assuming in the reworking of the packaging and recipe they'd change the puddings to a 2-pack with smaller jars anyway :p

I'll buy a box, but that'll be it, unless I honestly say OMG when biting into them!

I honestly wouldn't have thought the ingredients cost that much, so this pricing is on purpose, to make them seem more premium? Perhaps too premium by the looks of things. I'm expecting gold leaf on the top now ;)

Okay, the flavour is actually really good. Not sure if it's OMG! But it definitely made me want another.

It's frozen and needs to be heated in the microwave, but when the box says low, you really should try lower the intensity because on a high setting the whole thing looks like a melted mess afterwards. If you leave it in too long, it'll feel soggy and fall apart.

Comments from around the table were that the fudge stuck to someone's false teeth and another liked brownies and this was basically a brownie. All agreed though that $7 wasn't the right price.

Apologies for photo, hard to get a good one.
