Easier to upgrade from J to F than PE to J?

Hello learned AFF'ers.

I recently put in my upgrade request from J to F for SYD-DXB-LHR and return leg in hope that if I miss one I might get the other.

I was talking to a friend and he reckons that it's easier to get an upgrade from J to F than PE or Y to J, that seems strange to me since there are far fewer F seats but I thought I'd ask on here what he was on about?

I guess the idea he was trying to get across to me was that most people are happy enough with J and won't usually pay for J otherwise and therefore a large proportion of J is upgraded PE or Y?

Anyway, I'd be interested in your thoughts, thanks!

The biggest advantage is that if you don't get the upgrade you're still in J.

Of course! I've only flown J once (Shanghai to Sydney) but the thought of getting first class is quite appealing, am sick of burning points on domestic upgrades and silly stuff my wife wants from the Award Store!

with PE to J you have extra competition from the 30x more passengers and also those going from Y -> J and Y+ ->J.
Additionally if J is the highest class service there is nobody moving up to F

I'd suggest you let her know that the award store kills baby harp seals or something emotively similar. The redemption value is so poor u need to keep her away!

Makes sense.

Do most people take an F upgrade if they can? I would guess yes but perhaps not? Having not flown F even I'm not sure yet, anyway, one has to do it at least once right?

I made that point over and over, I caught her depleting my account to buy some fancy hand wash - no joke she spent like 60K points on a few bottles.

All things being equal, especially if it comes for free (i.e. operational upgrade), of course they would take the F upgrade ;) :D

Also, most of the time, a J to F upgrade cost in points is pretty inconsequential, especially compared to a Y to J upgrade. Of course, you had to be pretty good yourself to get that J ticket in the first place (which is upgradeable).

Most upgrade Y to J because they want to escape Y. Most upgrade J to F because they want a chance at F.

Change the PIN first.

Then, tell her you will be taking charge of all purchases from the QFF store. Which you will then dutifully fulfil by paying for those items in cash (using a card which qualifies for Qantas Frequent Flyer points) ;) Such a good husband :p

You need an intervention.

For god sakes man change the pin! ;)

To answer your question whilst there is much more competition for a Y/Y+ to J upgrade that the J to F the limited F availability makes it tougher at least in my experience. Certainly I've found Aus to US in particular (given there is no competitor) is tough for F upgrades

Oh my gosh. That has got to be a sin on this forum!

$11.5K SYD to Budapest, I was surprised that the points upgrade for the SYD-DXB-LHR portion was only 60K points actually I thought it would be much more, I think I paid 12K to upgrade from Y to J on a SYD-ADE flight once!

Probably because AUS/USA market is pretty tense in the premium market as is - mind you, there's not a whole lot of competition (the only F competition is UA... *cough* competition *cough*). So most of the F award seats and hitherto seats available for upgrades are probably taken.

On the LHR routes it could be different. Certainly when I flew QF31 (old days, this was SYD/SIN then SIN/LHR) 6 of us in the F cabin were points upgrades. Could be a different call now due to less F routes.

In theory it should be more difficult to get an F upgrade compared to a J upgrade, but the scales balance out due to saturation of upgrade requests. It definitely helps in each case to have status, of course.

I have, alas it was too late that time.

Honestly it was hand wash - how expensive can hand wash be anyway?

I'm a silver member but after the first leg I will go to gold (how long till those points go through and status increases anyway?) hence why I put in an upgrade request for both legs just in case I have a better shot at the return leg after I go gold.

You'll have to examine your lovely wife's hands and let us know :)

J to F upgrades are, on a like for like zone basis, are cheaper than Y to J upgrades (although if you are upgrading from Full Economy or Premium Economy, the difference is the same as J to F).

And to think that the upgrade points cost is the same as some silly hand wash !!!

It was a frustrating moment, I actually showed her everyones comments here for a laugh and in her defense she said -

"Hey it wasn't just handwash! It was 4 handwashes from Miranda Kerr!"
