Any reason why an aircraft operated by the Italian flag carrier is registered in Romania? But then again there are QF aircraft registered in NZ...

Romania isn't the only country they are registered in, Ireland is another.

The original Alitalia went broke from memory so it was part of the restructure.

Well for a start the Asiana tail wasn't attached anymore and in pretty bad shape, and the rest of the fuselage was semi burnt out so not the easiest thing to paint over i would have thought, even if the ATSB would have let anyone anywhere near it...

The photo in today's SMH seems to suggest that the Thai name and logo have been painted over overnight. Is this standard procedure?

Besides being Star Alliance protocol for emergency management it may also be an unofficial thing that is done in certain countries in an attempt to 'save face'. GA did this also after the crash in Jogjakarta & they are not a *A Member.

It also appears that SQ did this after the fatal crash of SQ6 in TPE back in October 2000, athough as they are a member of *A that would explain it however I don't think SQ Management would disagree with this practice.

I've never seen this been done until now, however it does make sense. I think the average punter wouldn't know which airline it was just by colour alone, it especially makes sense to black out xx_xx_ Airlines.

Unless your at their hub airport like BKK, which it would be fairly easy to put 2 and 2 together...

It's fairly common practice - but fairly pointless for this carrier at BKK unless every single bit of livery is removed.

The decision to black out the name of the airline was in accordance with Star Alliance network guidance on emergency management, but the move drew criticism and ridicule on social media.
Thai Airways official Smud Poom-On said that "blurring the logo" after an accident was a recommendation from Star Alliance known as the "crisis communication rule," meant to protect the image of both the airline and other members of Star Alliance.

Star have said thats not the case:

So this is turning into one of those he said she said sorta thing... Thai says they were recommended to do so by *A and *A say it's not in line...

Thai have confirmed that is in fact their policy, not Star Alliance's.

Thai had its story sorted out by this afternoon, though, and issued an official statement to clarify that "de-identifying an aircraft after an incident" is the company's policy, and not that of Star Alliance.

It was very much a successful landing in respect of the passengers and crew, covering up is all to do with face, I suspect its a bad PR mistake in this case.

Not sure if there's any truth to the report, but here in BKK it was stated that passengers were protesting at Thai Airways at the airport, about the lack of communication they were provided and that they had been left to fend for themselves with no help whatsoever from the actual airline.
