Recipe to Riches

Well lunch was a bit bland but otherwise OK, as expected being a snack the nutrition is hardly a star, one pack of 350g contains 10 Croqs, when eaten they provide 50% of my daily energy needs, 120% of my fat needs, 70% of my saturated fat needs, and 60% of my sodium needs, funnily enough I though they could have done with more salt.

You had 10 for lunch!!!

I had the whole pack (we dont have a freezer at work so it was a case of eat or discard). I am walking home from the last appointment to make up for it!

Have to be a power walk methinks! That's a lot of fat (in them croquettes! ;))

The show tanked in the ratings, Channel 10 are not happy but hopefully some happy AFF members with bonus points :)

They are contracted to run this as it is a paid for show - so it will struggle on I suspect....!

I was wondering what would happen if it went sour!

Were the episodes flimed some time ago to be able to have these products in available in the store the day after???

If it was done some time ago its not even like they could use feedback from the first screening to improve the format or how its done for the next week, or it is more of a live thing then maybe you could expect some improvement...

The series was definately filmed a while ago, otherwise the stuff wouldn't be on the shelves today. I relented and bought a packet thinking it wouldn't be a bad feed on a night shift at $6, but as we look at the packet, I realise it is something my 6 year old could demolish in a few minutes... ah well, caught the end of the replay during the day today and next weeks dish looks good..

Bought myself two boxes for pre-dinner drinks at the neighbours tonight. Should be about 6-8 people there to road test them.

I imagine Ten reserved the right to bump it to another time slot if it wasn't performing... Will be interesting to see how it plays out!

I'm just annoyed that this was the only targeted offer I got this week. I won't be wasting my time watching the show - 10 minutes was enough for me and that is 10 minutes I won't get back. As a promotion, this is a dog.

I cant wait to hear!

They were nice tasting, though could have been a bit more flavoursome and perhaps even had a bit more salt.

The box says 12 minutes at 180°C but all agreed if they were a bit crisper (and didn't fall apart in your hands) they'd be better, so perhaps longer in the oven. They also seemed to cool down incredibly quickly - piping hot in the oven, with in a couple minutes, cold on the plate.

I concur Sam(Matt Preston)h004, nice cravat BTW :D :D

Second week

Christine's Pork vindaloo
Erin's Maple macadamia ice cream
Sarah Jade's Chilli con carne

Again the whole format of the show seems very stupid. For example, there's only one stove for the 3 contestants and when one wants to use it for their whole dish, the others can't. Seems a little too BS, however I don't have to agree with the coughpy format to get my bonus points.

All 3 look good this week.

Additionally, Sarah Jade shows she has a lot of tattoos but is in fact a flight attendant (only noting it because it's recently made news eg. AirNZ). They had some footage, not sure if it was of her, in a black outfit walking through the airport. Couldn't work out which airline that'd be?

And you bring a guitar because....

Airline would be Jetstar?

I did think it was odd, but then again the whole format sucks. The judges said after the first cook off that they were meant to use that time to perfect their product but unless they cut a lot of footage it looks like they were given no heads up about the cook off in larger quantities. They had no time, in fact it was counting down on them.

The show could really find some great products and help perfect them to something Aussies or even the world would buy, but it's not set up to do that.

Sara Jade's Chilli Con Carne won, it'll be in the frozen goods section marketed as a TV dinner (I believe).

Next week is condiments, they could be cheaper.

It will be interesting to see the price of the TV dinner. I don't buy many of them but usually buy some when the special price is $4 or $5 for a brand name like McCain. I might buy one for my husband to try if they sell it at a similar price. I'm not paying $6 for it like last weeks price.

Condiments sound good and might be cheaper and more worthwhile.

Thats probably a weak point (one of many) of the show, if the price varies, then surely so does its sales, do the finalists get measured on unit sales or revenue?

Sara Jade's Chilli con Carne

Priced the same as last week at $5.99 there's already talk of value. But I note on the box it includes corn chips - and a generous amount too.

Prep is simple, from freezer to plate via microwave in 5 and a half minutes. Even comes with a tray so the 'mess' is contained.

Corn chip offering is generous, and not far from an original Doritos taste. Perhaps a smidgen less saltiness to taste, though less healthy as you'd expect when looking at the numbers on the back. One failing though is easy breakage of the corn chips when digging into the bowl.

Taste of the Chilli con Carne is good. Its a rich, full flavour and not simply a lot of sauce. There's definitely some spice and I see loads of chilli seeds, but it's not overly hot. That said, my nose wasn't running when I started eating.

Value? I'm not sure. It's definitely got everything you need in the box and packs the flavour. I also got bonus points.

With a Feb 2014 use-by I might stock up.
