Hi everyone,

in a few weeks, I'm booked on QF 8, to connect with QF 127.

Just thinking ahead....how often is QF 8 late, therefore missed connections from SYD to HK?

should I keep track of a flight coming into Brisbane ( not sure which one) to determine if we may need to change to a domestic flight to Sydney to make the 127

Does that make sense?.... It is Saturday night.....

TQ

I did this trip a while ago and Qantas will change you free of charge to go on the 6am domestic flight to Sydney if QF 8 is late.

I got a text message at 3.30am to go on another flight, Qantas are great with this

The flight originates in DFW 2 days prior as QF8 so you could monitor it on www.flightradar24.com or similar to check the progress of the flight before you go to bed then again the next morning before you head off to the airport.

If you haven't got a text or phone call & you know the QF8 is late/diverted see the staff at the ticket counter in the domestic terminal adjacent to the Valet Parking counter who will transfer you on to the first available flight then proceed to a checkin counter to drop off bags & get your boarding passes.

Yes, all on one ticket, so I won't worry.

also, now that I know where it originates, I will keep an eye on it the night before, so that I will have a good idea of what is happening early the next morning.

cant wait, as I love a few days in HK and taking my sister, who has never been before.

TQ

QF8 is a pretty decent start to an OS trip. Easy transit in SYD, nice J seat, extended Flounging.....depending on your next flight.

We're doing QF8-QF11 later in the year.......given all is on time we'll get a lazy 4 hours Flounging:D

Hi Amaroo,

that sounds like a nice plan, but unfortunately I'm not at the fabulous level to be allowed into the first lounge.

although, we have PE tickets, with an upgrade request in for J, so fingers crossed.

sounds like a great plan

thanks

TQ

Does anyone have experience with a delayed QF8 where it is a final segment of something other than DFW-SYD (e.g. SIN-xBNE-SYD)? I have done this a couple of times to avoid the A330 on SIN-SYD, but also have been lucky enough to have had nil, or unnoticeable delay on the QF8. I'm on the same link up again next month, and wondered, if there was a longer than expected delay on QF8 that QF could see... would QF will start moving people to domestic connections, checking bags through, etc. My preference is to stay in BNE international and move straight back to the international J lounge after QF52 for a better breakfast than J on board can offer... but wouldn't like to be stranded too long! Any other international QF/OW connections from BNE-SYD?

Keep an eye on the monthly lounge threads - might be lucky enough to jag a guest spot or two.

In a word - no. You'd need to do a domestic connection to SYD.

That's an interesting one as your luggage would be transferred behind the scenes from QF52 to QF8 due to it being an intl to intl connex so it would not be unloaded on to the baggage carousel at BNE Intl as you're a transit pax & Customs clearance is completed in SYD.

If you do find yourself in this situation after disembarking from the QF52 I would head directly to the transfer desk which is airside & run the scenario past them as the QF staff there will be able to give you an answer.

I take it you will have checked luggage with you, however even if travelling with hand luggage only there may still be implications for Customs as you would be listed as a transit pax en-route to SYD whereas if you change to a QFd flight BNE/SYD you would then be a disembarking pax in BNE as you would be clearing Customs there.

Thanks Oz... indeed an interesting one. I'm hoping I won't really have to find out what happens - but given they sometimes call this one QF 'late', I thought worth the question! I'm sure QF would figure something out. Immigration probably don't mind that I had originally had a BP to clear immigration at SYD instead of BNE, but I imagine getting the checked luggage (which there will be) would be a somewhat inefficient process if it could not travel with me to SYD.

For something like SIN-xBNE-SYD, QF52 from SIN departs quite some time after QF8 from DFW, so unless you're checking in seriously early in SIN, you should be able to tell if the QF8 is going to be delayed into BNE, and have everything sorted out before the luggages get tagged.

Good point! I'll keep an eye on that... which reminds me, and at the risk of taking OT a little... does anyone happen to know how good the TripIt Pro flight tracking feature would be with advising something like this as well? I'm in my first paid membership year, and haven't been able to give it much of a workout yet...

I would think it would but I haven't yet upgraded to Tripit Pro so just using basic Tripit.

One feature I like even about the basic (free) Tripit is if you have a gmail account & use that for any travel itineraries etc it interfaces automatically with Tripit so downloads & creates a new trip. Previously once your eticket receipts etc arrived in eg your Yahoo email account you then had to forward that email to [email protected] so a good time saving tool.

I haven't tried this, but I would imagine that the flight status page on the Qantas website would be adequate for the above mentioned scenario.

I use QF8 quite often for my BNE-SYD flights. The down side to things is going thru the immigration point in Sydney as a domestic passenger which can sometimes take almost as long as the flight itself. The upside is that even as a domestic journey you get the limo service if travelling in J. Last trip was as a JASA so didn't cost me anything but points and a free ride from home to the airport and then from Syd airport to the CBD. Check the QF website and the flight status for the DFW departure of QF8 around 2.00pm (local time) the day before and you can tell if the plane left on time it will generally arrive pretty close to the scheduled time
