Anyone stayed at this hotel?

Other than Ibis and/or "budget" is there anything bad about the hotel?

The room rate of ~$80/night is the huge selling point for me and i don't have anyone special I need to impress by staying in overpriced chain hotels.

Any other similar choices around MEL airport?

As long as you know that the comments by cmon0005 would be considered high praise for this area. It's not close to the airport unless you have a car. Nor is it close to anything else of vague importance.

Ibis styles in the city can be had for $90 and includes a basic breakfast, stayed last year and thought it good.

I will have a hire car and food is the last thing I need nearby.

I have looked at current sale and that rate does not come up.

I have also found Bayview on the Park for ~$75/night for a Queen room. I stayed there ~10 years ago but I am guessing it is very dated now.

Bayview on the Park would run rings around Ibis Budget Fawkner on location and hotel comfort.
In fact almost anywhere would run rings around where Ibis Fawkner is located. ;)

Ibis Fawkner is a VERY dodgy hotel. You could not pay me to stay there
Bayview on the park is also a dump looking at the recent Tripadvisor reviews

I would be spending $100-$120 per night and getting something more decent

If the extra $40 is going to break the bank then spend a little less on booze or ciggys for a few days

It is 2 nights so ~$80 more on accommodation.

And then why hire the economy car when one can hire an XR6?

And don't bring lunch along but spend $10-$12 for lunch.

And don't have a yeeros for dinner but go out and spend $29 on a steak.

It is not just about the money. It is about spreading the money around as far as possible so I can travel as often as possible.

All I need is a couple of days of golf and I feel more comfortable knowing I have spent wisely rather than throwing money away on things I do not need.

But hey that is me....

Wow the Old F1's. How anyone chooses to stay at these places baffles me. Sure they are cheap, but cheap and dodgy. No thanks.
Make sure you take your clubs out of your car when you park at the hotel.

I had some relatives visiting last year and they asked me to book a cheap hotel close to where I live.
The Bayview on the park had a good deal but I wasn't sure about it so I went to check it out myself before booking.

The hotel is... Ok. The rooms are not that bad and it's probably the cheapest option in the area for a 'decent' hotel.

I would say that 75$ is a good deal for Bayview, better then the F1 (or whatever it's called now).

Not to mention its next to a freeway and noise could be a problem, also it's "Hoon" and "Burnout" central around that area..

Enjoy your time with the local hookers, druggies and other such people.

Understandable, but as mentioned above, you couldn't pay me to stay at either of the hotels.

Understand if you take a stance based on personal experience.

TripAdvisor reviews do not really mean much to me. If you had a good stay you are more than likely not going to take the time to review. Those complaints are a very small percentage of the overall number of people staying at the hotel.

I have been travelling long enough to know that people can be very fussy and will complain about the smallest of things. In fact if you have been on AFF long enough then you will realise people will complain about the smallest of things even in 5 star hotels.

I will more than likely book Bayview on the Park as the booking is fully refundable up until the last minute.

Where did you end up booking JohnK?
I will book Bayview on the Park so I can be close to city for drinks/dinner. From memory I can park nearby overnight and be out of there in the morning to avoid council parking charges.

What JohnK has not told us is where is going play golf (the reason for the trip ?)
At this stage it looks like being Kilmore Golf Club on the Saturday (or Kyneton if I cannot get the right tee time) and more than likely Goonawarra Golf Club on the Sunday. Both in the members competition.

I will more than likely need to return the car to Avis in Franklin Street on Saturday by 5:30pm and hire another car from there to return back to MEL airport on the Sunday. ;)

If you are playing golf at Kilmore - Kyneton - Sunbury you are better to stay on that side of the city/airport on the Friday night at least. If not both Friday & Saturday. Otherwise you are crossing the city center on a Friday night and again Saturday morning. Be aware of the road tolls from/to Tulla airport. Will add 30~45~60 minutes travel time. Getting accommodation in Kilmore Woodend Kyneton should not be an issue (and cheaper than the city), Not much accommodation in Sunbury (some motels). AFL finals can/will limit affordable accommodation in the city during September
