In BNE and ADL where I live, travel on a plastic card is cheaper than buying a one time fare. I guess you need to do a cost benefit analysis just to use transport. Now where is my calculator......

Dunno, but in my experience, Melbourne is rather unique in not having a reasonable cash fare option....

London is much the same. The cash fare is often twice the Oyster fare. £5 to buy the Oyster card, then additional to top it up.. but as mentioned previously, if you decide to return it, at least you get the £5 back.
