SPG points redemptions (low points balance)

Hi guys,

Starwood hotels are generally fall outside my company's travel policy due to price, so I tend to stay at them only sporadically when on holiday. I've seen the redemption rates for rooms on the SPG website, which is crystal clear. I'm wondering what some suggestions may be for utilizing points if your balance is pretty low and you have no status (say 5,000 - 10,000). Or is it not even worth considering?

EG - at the W in Seminyak last week I noticed you could redeem SPG points for drinks and things, but they didn't have points charges listed anywhere and I couldn't find any further information during my brief google search.

I would just save them for conversion to miles given the extra 5K offered when you convert 20K, or use them for stays using cash + points, in Asia 4K will get you a night at many Alofts.

Search for Cash & Points redemption rates or use points to upgrade room category, or 1000 points gets you up to 5 nights at 50% off rack (good value on some occasions)
