Boeing delivered their 50th 747-8 overnight (LH's 8th), almost halfway through the production now, will be interesting to see if Paris digs up more orders!

Sometimes it's a shame the airline world is ruled by economics, not aesthetics. I'd much rather sit on my patio in SYD watching 747-8s lining up for 16R than the growing number of A380s I'm seeing these days.

Wow, I had no idea so many have been delivered. If someone had asked me to guess, I would have said "maybe 10".

Me too.
I guess it's not inconceivable that they might even overtake 787 deliveries if they don't get their act together.

Considering both are at 50, mind you there are plenty of 787s just waiting paperwork to go to China.

Because they are mostly Cargo a/c, they aren't as "visible" as say the 380s or the 787 (due to it's other issues.....).

With only 50 orders left, the 748 production line wont run too much longer...

As docjames mentions, I was under the impression the majority were cargo orders, not passenger.

It is a shame that this model isn't more popular though, but I guess the bigger airlines are waiting for a stretch A380-900...

Boeing have not updated their stats but currently its 2Fs to 1 passenger variant, with it 1:1 for the backlog

Quite a few of the pax versions are for private jets. I do believe the number of pax versions going onto the airlines is around the 28 mark.

9(including mine LOL) are for BBJ ops, rest airliner (31)

I wish LH could give some guideance about real world seat cost vs 380. I suspect, given the lack of data, that the "real world" answer isn't palatable for Boeing.

I wish CX would order ~ 50 of the darn things, but then, see wish #1 for why they probably havent.....

I think airlines who want/need the large planes would've ordered the A380 already, while those who don't would be lined up for the 77W. After all, going from 2 engines to 4 didn't double the maximum allowed payload, so airlines wouldn't consider the ultra large planes unless they are confidend that they can consistently filled up.

Actually found out a few days ago that Cathay have been sending the 747-8F to MEL for many months!

Need to head down to see her :)

Any chance of a 748i for QF to service JNB and SCL where the 4 engines is a crucial capability? I remember VA failing on MEL-JNB because they route was slower with the 2 engined 777.

Near enough to zero - they're tied to the A380.

If anything, I think it was the lack of partners for onwards connections rather than the extra hour or 2 that killed it.

As an aside, that problem has now been solved anyway - since December 2011, 330 minute ETOPS has been available as an option on the 773, 77W, 77E and 77L. A 777 built with or upgraded to that option could fly Australia to JNB via the great circle route.

map (1).jpg
(Dark grey is the area "prohibited" by 330 minute ETOPS, light grey is the area prohibited by 240 minute ETOPS. V Australia used to fly a "dogleg" to stay out of the light gray zone - MEL-JNB via great circle is pretty much coincident with SYD-JNB as plotted above. However a 777 would be limited in how far south it can go to chase favourable winds).

I know that all the Boeing fanboys will hate me for this but as an Airbus fanboy, I just can't resist to mention that this plane is simply totally unnecessary as the A380 serves this market already in the most beautiful possible way- not with an ugly pimple on its back but as a true double-decker plane that deserves its name :p

Now go ahead, I love being shot! ;)
