10 years for "graft", no doubt influenced by who he was "grafting". And a woman who was gang raped got 12 months, the same as her attackers. Proportionate?

IMO, any country that allows an abuse of human rights such as the jailing of a rape victim and only detaining the perpetrators for 12 months shouldn't be allowed to operate an international airport and should be subject to heavy trade sanctions by the UN and liberal countries like Australia.

If they didn't have the worlds oil supply, this wouldn't be tolerated.

I see that you've left the context of my comment out of your quote. The setting for the example was a night club. Not a work setting, so I have no idea why you're confusing the example with irrelevance. If you think men and women, men and men and women and women don't touch each other in a suggestive BUT not sexual way (I have no idea why you're reading more into my comment than was stated) every night of the week then perhaps you need to get out more.

I said nothing about graffitti, so I'm not sure why you're sharing the information with me, but nice to know

I said "if" it was in a social setting with a workmate. And being in a nightclub does not excuse you from a criminal charge of sexual assault if it can be proven that you inappropriately touched someone and they chose to report it to police.

As far as getting out more I reckon I might just have seen a few more criminal cases than you have. ;). And know how the law works.

The graffiti bit had nothing to do with your post and wasn't attributed to you.

Actually, the UAE does not have any oil reserves - that was exhausted about 6yrs ago

Didn't know that.

Perhaps the western world only get upset about draconian, sexist and oppressive laws when terrorists are involved.

???? According to the estimates of the International Energy Agency (IEA), as of March, the UAE had a sustainable oil production capacity of 3.02 million bpd. The Paris-based IEA estimated the country’s oil output in March at 2.70 million bpd and its average output at 2.67 million bpd during the first quarter of 2013. Current production rates can be sustained for 92 years?

Are you confusing Abu Dhabi and Dubai, 90% of the reserves are in Abu Dhabi, 10% in Dubai.

The diversification of its economy is likely to continue over the next several years, but for economists studying the UAE the most important indicator to watch remains the price of crude oil

Perhaps I'm not as dumb as I was portrayed (or look)! ;)

Thanks for the stats.

The guides on our tours in Dubai frequently mentioned that GDP was becoming less reliant on oil, but its still important, especially if someone needs to pick up the tab for the Burj Khalifa ;).

Medhead you did say a fellow got the cane for littering. You were incorrect and I was merely informing you of your mistake.

This thread is so far off the rails, someone please kill it off.

I disagree. A lot of the reasons for people saying they will avoid DXB are coming out, and there is a good deal of discussion that is arguing for and against these positions.

I don't think there should be an argument.

Everyone has their subjective opinions and reasons for or against wanting to travel through Dubai.

That doesn't make people right or wrong - but it is interesting to see both the objections / concerns and the DXB fanbois ;)

Edit: Corrected the DXB auto-correct for Browski's benefit ;)

United Arab Emirates - Analysis - U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)

I was going off a tour I did of Dubai quite a few years ago which stated that Dubai oil reserves would run out in 2006. I was probably mistaken with respect to UAE vs Dubai and I should have said Dubai instead of UAE. They said at the time that there was no hope of finding additional reserves which is why Dubai was changing from an oil based economy to a trading based economy - they wanted to become the "Hong Kong of the Middle East".

Oh my,I cant believe all this carry on.Singapore is not Dubai.I have been to Dubai once and dont want to go back.I went to Singapore once and have been back 20 times.
As to the claim that Singapore is as bad as the UAE-rubbish.
Google tourists jailed in Singapore and then tourists jailed in Dubai.Chalk and cheese.
I do not understand why anyone would try to compare Dubai to Singapore.

Anyway it is all a moot point.I would much rather stay in Bangkok anyway despite the problems tourists can have there.
Totally agree. ;)

I do not understand why anyone would try to compare Dubai to Singapore.

Here's a start (they've been stated as reaons people wont transit through this country)

Which country has anti-gay laws?
Which country has draconian laws against freedom of speech
Which country has punishments that would be considred absurd in Australia?
Which country has anti-semitic policies?

I do not understand why anyone would try to compare Dubai to Singapore.

Because people have cited anti gay laws as a reason not to go and then said they would go via SIN where the laws are the same.

someone let me know when Jews are allowed into the UAE. I don't intend to transit through a country where I am prevented from leaving the international airport. Anyone think that is unreasonable? Anti semites to the fore of the queue.

Have you not read any of the previous posts?

Jews are allowed into the UAE. Muslims from Israel are not.

Indeed, it would have been slightly embarassing for Emirates to not let the CEO of Qantas, an airline they've just signed up a partnership with, into Dubai on the basis of him being gay.

I heard the religious police were being trained to identify Jews by their supposed 'physical characteristics'
