At Gate - self scan BP to board flight ?

Not sure if this has been discussed, but could there be self scanning about to take place to board flights at the actual gate thereby eliminating the gate agent?

The gate agents where just as puzzled at it and how it worked.

This one is at gate 2 QF Domestic Sydney.

You appear to enter from left of photo, then the blue doors open (like at railway stations in Paris).
To the right you can partially make out a QF gate agent ... just further to the right of her was the door to the gangway.
The entrance line appears to snake along the actual window between the seating and the window to the planes.
