Hi All. I’ve recently attained FF Gold after a JASA status run MEL – SYD - ASP over the weekend, with SCs doubled as I received the recent Qantas double SC promo email.
I’ve still got 2 months until my membership year end (May 30), and am seriously considering chasing the 580 SCs needed to attain WP (so 290 with double SCs) (we have several o/s trips in the second half of the year, and access to First lounges would be a real sweetener). However, having reviewed the JASA run list, there don’t appear to be any domestic runs ex Mel which can net me 290 SCs.

Does anyone have any ideas re linking ex MEL to one of the other domestic runs in order to achieve this? Ideally, I’d want to manage the flights over no more than 2 days (weekend). Thanks for your help.

on a DSC run that will net you 560 Status credit so then do a cheap Mel Sydney return for as low as $180.00 which will give you 40 SC based on DSC thus a toatal of 600SC for around $700.00 which doesnt seem too bad to me $1.16 per status credit

I am interested in this too but do not have a double SC offer...my year end is 31/10/2013 currently Gold and need 550 each (husband and I to get to plat)...question is is it worth it....looks like will cost us each about $1000 plus 144K points as we would need to do the Mel-Per- Karratha run twice to achieve the 550 sc's...We are planning a trip to Hawaii before the end of the year and a OWE Award in J in 2014 so use of lounges and other benefits would help that and also perhaps the soft landing to Gold (?) in 2014 if we dont achieve the SC's required to maintain - which I doubt we will. Do any of you have any opinions of whether I should book a JASA as per Ansett response below now and then hope for a double offer before October and if not do another one or just be happy with our Gold Status until Oct 2014 and try and maintain that status. We do have the points to burn if necessary

Be aware that you need to both book and fly during the double status credit promo period in order to qualify for the promotion. A JASA booked now for later in the year will only get you single SCs, even if you later receive an offer which covers that time period.

This is very true however one could run the risk then if the offer does appear cancel the existing booking as J should be fully refundable and rebook during the qualifying period.

It is ofcourse a risk if changes occur or the flights simpley are not available.

thanks just need that illusive double offer or make a decision to pay and use some points ....I had to recently cancel a JASA to NZ because of family emergency so may re visit that - Good Luck with your plans too

I was really surprised when I cancelled my NZ JASA last week that I was not penalised at all, thought I would be up for 5000 points per person per booking, but points posted back within 24 hours along with $$$

I'm missing something here I think.... suggestion to spend $700 and spend a weekend (and another day) flying around Oz with no purpose in order to get enough SC to get WP....in order to be able to get into first class lounges on a couple of trips? Is it really worth that (never mind carbon footprint, waste of days etc...).
What else does WP give you that's worth outlaying so much $ and time?

Just a few reasons off the top of my head:
1. extra points earned as an WP/SG vs a lower status
2. lower SCs needed next year to retain
3. better chance of upgrades
4. choice of better seats before T-80

Yes, as Andy has said above and I agree:

Extra points on future flights
Better upgrade chances
Better seating choices
First lounge
Domestic business lounges

For $700 that is great $$ spent :)

probably the biggest consideration for me, is the soft landing to Gold in the m'ship year after WP. This essentially means gaining 2 years of lounge access which I think is well worth the value.

Two options - do another ASP run (240 points) and then a cash fare to OOL (via SYD). One leg discount economy and one leg flexi fare (60SCs)

Or to be different book a discounted econony/flex fare cash fare to OOL via SYD (60SC) and then book a JASA OOL-HBT as they often have several options that are OOL-SYD-MEL-HBT for 240SCs (or other way around naturally) and once again. May need to overnight in HBT for that one though ;-)

it is a heck of a lot of flying and require the entire weekend but worth it (and you basically end up using only 48,000 points and apx $500-600 cash all up) - and you'll earn a few of those points back anyway!

I just achieved WP by way of the ASP (JASA) and OOL (cash) combos - so speaking from experience! Though if I have to overnight in another ASP hotel I might scream!

Extra points on future flights - 33% more than gold... to get $700 value you would need to fly a lot...better to get a new credit card?
Better upgrade chances - if you're very lucky and fly a lot....'chances' is the right word..
Better seating choices - Hmmm....I certainly seem to get the shadow effect, but that's not worth much if you are flying with your partner..
First lounge - nice, without doubt, but worth $700 and three days of your time for a couple of hours? Better to spend a small % of the money on a decent feast at the best restaurant near the airport? Paid lounges offer showers (my main concern on long flights) for much less.
Domestic business lounges - IMHO no better than the club. A little quieter maybe (sometimes), but in fact, whenever I visit, the kids go back out to the club for food because there's less choice in the Business lounge....

For $700 that is great $$ spent - I don't think so....

I think there's a few fanbois on here....??

(Don't get me wrong, WP makes traveling life much more comfortable...I just question whether it is worth spending so much money and time trying to get it as is being suggested....)

If you already have gold for next year, and have several international flights back end of this year, will you not already get gold for following year?

Funny thing is I'm actually saving money on the outlay. Flights normally are about $1k return from Isa to Sydney but if I'm careful with my data I'm paying $350 return plus 48k points. Slightly different to travelling just for the hell of it but I'm saving money AND making WP. Definite win win.

It may not be something you would do in order to get the benefits people have listed; however, not everybody is the same so their motivation is different in this regard. They may fly individually and not with the kids like you said you do. Different horses for different courses.
