Qantas adds a 747F to fleet by year end [Now 'Canned']

Qantas today announced its intention to lease a Boeing 747-400ERF freighter aircraft for its global freight business.
The aircraft will replace an older Boeing 747-400F freighter that is currently operated on Qantas’ behalf by an external provider.
Qantas Freight Enterprises Executive Manager Lisa Brock said the replacement aircraft offered greater capacity and range, and would deliver increased efficiency.
“With an existing lease arrangement coming to an end we have taken this opportunity to update our international fleet,” said Ms Brock.
“This is a near-new freighter aircraft that will help us provide a better service for our customers and reduce costs.
“Qantas Freight now has a five per cent share of the cargo market from China to the United States, flying from both Shanghai and Chongqing. We have a strong presence in other parts of Asia and New Zealand, and our investment in this aircraft underlines our commitment to these regions.

Why would they convert of only 6 in the world, all of which where recently refurbished? Quite a few ERFs around, it's probably n797ba, one of the last built.

It's a shame we wont see a 747F in Qantas freighter colours, but I just hope they're correctly predicting what the market is going to do.

I wonder where the commitment has gone though

I do wonder what is happening to that plane. Is it being mothballed somewhere? I suspect Qantas will sniff around in a year or two when the market does improve.

BITRE does show some softness in the cargo market in to/out of Australia (however this is of course not the only market QantasFreight operate in).

I am confident we will see one or two QantasFreight liveried and crewed 747Fs sometime in the future, when conditions improve.
