Browsed an ad in the Brisbane Curious-Mail today for PR selling fares from BNE-MNL. Just had a chance to search on the web and notice they are starting a thrice per week MLL-BNE-MNL service

[-]MNL-BNE Mo We Sa 22:00 - 09:20
BNE-MNL Tu Th Su 10:10 - 18:00[/-]

Now:

MNL-BNE Mo We Sa 20:55 - 08:10
BNE-MNL Tu Th Su 09:15 - 17:05

The flight stops in Darwin which would make the return trip a little rough for working upon arrival.

For a few dates that I searched for in Sept, there are fares for $632 return via Bestflights but about $1,300 direct on PR website.

It is good news for Brisbanites doing business in Philippines. :)

That is cheap for a full service airline, I take my family to the Philippines regularly but I really can't see myself using PAL.

I know they did a lot of work in 2010 to get their fleet up to a standard when aussies might start using them, so it might be worth a look in. Although I am sure I saw that MH is having a sale also to MNL, I remember J being 2500 return, I didnt check y though.

I havent been to MNL I want to go well mainly to the islands but theres only so much you can fit in each year and we haven't quite gotten there yet.

Shelltom my wife is filipino so if you want any advice or suggestions let me know. It would be a pleasure to help you since I don't have much expertise with anything on AFF except this topic :)

I wouldn't spend much time in Manila most of it isn't that nice, there isn't that much to see besides intramuros to see the spanish influence & history. We stay in Makati as there is plenty shopping to do and nice hotels to stay at. I like the Shangri La there.

What makes the Philippines truly special are the 7000 islands, you can find many locations which I would consider to be a paradise. Wonderful stretches of sand and wildlife.

Head up to the 100 islands up the northern end of Luzon it is fairly undeveloped and worthwhile even though you have to endure a long bus trip. They are building an airport nearby which will help a lot.

Another place which requires a long bus journey is El Nido on Palawan but it is quite beautiful. Puerta Princessa is the main city on Palawan and there is much to do there. Go to the underground river or do the firefly river tour which I found to be truly magical and one of the best things I have ever experienced even though it was only 45 minutes or even less. Palawan doesn't even have a cinema on the whole island. Foodwise try the chao long (most delicious vietnamese pho I have ever had although I haven't been to Vietnam itself yet).

Have a look at Bohol I have never seen so many starfishes on a beach anywhere else.

The place we do go back to every year is Boracay. Yes it's very touristy but we love it, there are so many hotels to choose from and lots of restaurants and it is the perfect location for a great cheap holiday IMO better than any tourist island in Thailand.
This is the place where you can just relax and soak it all in. Walk along the beach stop off at any beach front hotel use their sun lounges, order an inexpensive coughtail and enjoy the atmosphere.

Last year we at Boracay for the chinese new year and 90% of the hotels were fully booked, but to me it wasn't crowded there was still so much space on the beach especially around station 3 where I stay. The only crowded part is the walkway along the beach with hawkers trying to entice you to go on their tour or jetskit etc.

Lots of beach activities I go snorkelling everday when I'm there. Hotels are expensive in the Philippines but you can easily find acommodation starting from $30 all the way up $400 plus with places like the Shangri La. Lots of very good hotels for less than $100. Go and eat at the clifftop restaurant at the Shangri La it is very nice. Do go on one of the many sailing boats for an hour around sunset.

Philippines as you know is a 3rd world country so do be prepared for poverty. Most of the locals have nothing but do get to know some of them and you will soon realise they are amongst the happiest people in the world. I think it would do a lot of good for our children to see what it is like living in a country like the Philippines hopefully to teach them to be more appreciative of what they have and be more humble.

A bar the southern end of the main Boracay beach, a great place to go snorkelling.

I've wanted to go for about 3 years now once I found out how amazing the beaches were. I was just talking with my partner about the $2500 MH J return flights, but he has no leave. He is a diver. We tried to make it a joint hobby but it turns out I am just truly terrified of the water and I do need to keep my head above the water, so I was interested in El Nido, but also Palau and a few other places for diving. We (I more so) have been to 3rd world countries before. I'm not really phased, people are people some are good some are bad irrespective of wealth.
I am interested as to what about PR you do not like (especially for that price).

I'm worried about flight safety and the maintenance of their aging fleet. Although this is changing now that San Miguel has bought 49% share of the company. A lot of airplanes have been ordered late last year.

Personally I've flown with them domestically once and they were fine but my wife flew from MNL to SYD and she was seated near a smelly toilet and she says the room you have in economy isn't great.

Within the Philippines we mainly fly with Cebu Pacific they have a fairly modern fleet and we've never had any significant problems. Longest delay being around 2 hours on new years day due to the thick smog caused by NYE fireworks.

IME with PR 200+ flights, has been mostly positive.
Contrary to some beliefs, In 2013.. there is nothing sinister about PR's planes & maintenance, pilots &/or crew.
I have flown on a wide range of their airplanes in different classes for many domestic & international sectors & the only issue that can be negated for PR is perhaps the less than spacious cabin in Y & the catering is not up to par with the likes of SQ, EK & QF.
Yes, As with many other carriers, I have had numerous delays over the years, though usually weather related, which I always allow certain time buffer zones, particularly during typhoon season.
I also fly with Cebu Pacific extensively & a smattering of other carriers within Philippines, though I'm always interested to hear others experiences.
Cheers,
jl

Tried Philippines Airlines not by choice HKG/MNL/DVO? (Davao), very old planes, changed gate, left very late, no food to speak of but had peanuts and water. At least we lived in total luxury in suite at Marco Polo and on our friends private island. Water was pristine, food excellent, service like no other, met a few locals without much all very happy.

Also flew PAL to DVO to get to Samal (Pearl Farm Beach Resort).

I have no complaints about PAL - the flight, food and service was OK (albeit the plane was quite dated) - but no longer choose to fly them since discovering they are banned from flying into the EU.

Though as of this month Philippines has passed the aviation safety audit, so a certain optimism that the current EU fly ban will be lifted for PAL, in addition to a number of confirmed new airplane orders for PAL.

Wow. Good news all around! Thanks for the heads up!

Now all they need to do is partner with OW ;)

That is a very good deal George.

PAL from Sydney has always been $1100 + for Y (not that I have looked often).

In the Manila press last week I saw a similar fare advertised and my immediate thoughts were that they had preferential fares when starting out from MNL. Glad to see it's also available out of BNE.

Looking at some travel dates in July. It is actually cheaper to book the J fare than the best economy fare on the same flights....

Which lounge do they use in BNE?
