Australia's proposed tallest tower, approved by state Planning Minister Matthew Guy two weeks ago, will infringe on federal regulations protecting aircraft safety, casting doubt on whether it can be built.
The Australia 108 building would be the tallest residential tower in the southern hemisphere. But the glass-and-concrete monolith set to soar above the CBD appears to breach Essendon Airport's airspace.
Federal protections – known by the acronym PANSOPS – pertain to buildings or activities that pierce Australian airspace. They are designed to allow aircraft to fly safely in and out of airports and are set by international agreement. Essendon Airport's runway arrival plans show prescribed plane routes directly above Melbourne's CBD, which is 13 kilometres away. http://theage.domain.com.au/tallest-building-creating-turbulence-20130325-2gqdm.html
Interesting that the state Liberal minister approved this without considering the affect on Essendon airport. Interesting to see just how many things need to be considered when proposing tall buildings.
