Despite reports that some passengers could wait up to 10 hours for connections in Dubai on the way to Europe as part of its fledgling Emirates alliance, Qantas has declared that travelling to the continent via its new Middle East hub will be faster than going through Singapore.
Qantas, which on March 31 will launch its new route from Australia to Europe via Dubai, has released research which shows that its flights from Melbourne and Sydney to London will be about 30 minutes shorter than travelling through Singapore or Hong Kong.

Qantas Emirates Alliance | Stopover times in Dubai

We can save a whole 30 minutes on a trip that is something like 20 hours of flying time plus another two in transit at the airport. What a phenomenal saving!!

Well I think 30 minutes is worth a mention despite your sarcasm.

The real advantage is if you're going anywhere other than London!

Whats more valuable to me is the potential time savings of not going through London if you are going to another European destination and the potential airport tax savings. But if it were purely Dubai or Singapore and a 30 mins savings, then from my experience in both airports, time goes much quicker in Changi than Dubai airport. I also dislike bus transfers from plane to terminal much so again the preference would be Changi.

Last few times I've been through Dubai airport (admittedly a couple of years now), it always resembled a campsite with people sleeping everywhere. Not sure if that's the case anymore with the new A380 only terminal.

.... and Melbourne is 30 minutes faster than Sydney so you just saved an hour :!:

Indeed  I also love stopping over in Singapore but have no interest in ever visiting Dubai again so it helps me little. It's looking like SQ and CX for me most of the time.

I wonder if they've made a rod for their back if the timings dont always work well....

So how much time do we save from BNE to LHR or FRA, Qantas? If you can also tell me how a 10 across 777 is going to be comfortable in economy, that would be much appreciated ;).

Well I'm pretty impressed with the time savings in my Mum's trip later this year BNE-BCN-WAW-BNE.

The destruction of the SIN hub also makes it even more unlikely that QF will ever resume services to India, which is unfortunate.

That depends, actually. I just booked my first flight on the new schedule going to MUC and back- much worse timing that going via LHR (though, admittedly, avoiding that shocker of an airport is a benefit in itself!). I've decided to include a two day stopover on the way back and will be trying the "Dubai Connect" on the way out but still- the connection times to and from Germany are everything but ideal.

Although from their "improving Asia connections" announcement last month, they mentioned direct services on 787's to Mumbai and Delhi ableit from 2015~ maybe....
I do miss the old QF51/52 to/from BOM, until it was axed last year..

the FRA option is pretty similar in timings but there is now the option of leaving FRA in the afternoon and getting into SYD late in the evening only 1 day later instead of early in the morning 2 days later.

Good point. I don't really complain anyway- I'm really curious to experience EK, the lounge in Dubai and even the Dubai Connect service. I already put an hour into my diary to sit down and write a detailed trip report :D

Also priced a FRA-SYD-FRA flying QF flight number all the way and J is still priced at about AUD5000, also looking forward to spending a couple of hours there in August and some Chauffeur Drive in SYD and DXB and FRA

I recall I have flown BOM-SYD non-stop on a Qantas A330. Would that distance have been possible? I'm nearly certain it wasn't a 747

Destruction?

Same number of flights to SIN from SYD/MEL/BNE. The only loss is 1 x daily PER and 3 x weekly ADL flights.

Don't forget that the flights to SIN will no longer feed flights to LHR, both on QF (moved to DXB) and BA (end of JSA), which means less demand on the route due to Europe bound pax now all heading through DXB if on QF numbers.
