From my understanding it is capable already to take the 787 . In the Master Plan an extension of the runway is planed in the next 5 years , which would as i understand allow it to take bigger a/c then it is currently , which i assume would include the 777.

Can't see them being able to extend it much to the South... it's a bit like ZQN, have to work with what you've got.

How big is a 77L compared to a D7 333?

Why can they handle D7 but not a 77L?

Its not all about the size of the aircraft but more to do with the fuel required to be carried to alllow for a 15 hour flight to LAS plus diversion. There is no aircraft currently capable of doing it on the existing runway length. Very ball park but from calculations done recently it was about 11 hours fllying time in a A330 or 777 that was the maximum from OOL under current runway length. If the approval is given for the extension to the south it will address all of the issues I believe.

Runway 14/32
The current runway 14/32 has an available take off length of 2,342 metres in the 14 direction and 2,492 metres in the 32 direction.
The existing runway lengths are adequate for current operations and target destinations within Australia, the Pacific and South East Asia. Consistent with the 1994 FACMaster Plan and 2001 and 2006 GCAPL Master Plans and surrounding land use planning, protection is to be maintained for an ultimate runway length of 2,858 metres.
The current runway 14/32 has a landing distance available of 2,342 metres in the 14 direction and 2,042 metres in the 32 direction. Runway 32 has a 450 metre displaced landing threshold.
To improve reliability during adverse weather conditions and enable larger long-haul aircraft to utilise the runway
it is intended to relocate the runway 32 landing threshold approximately 310 metres to the south, within the existing runway length, during the first five-year period of
the 2011 Master Plan. This will result in a 140 metre displaced landing threshold.
The proposed relocation of the landing threshold has come as a result of identified forecast growth, which shows larger aircraft will require the full operating length of the runway.

There aren't enough passengers in both ports to justify it. BNE to Vegas or Vegas to SYD, yes it could work because you would have enough Australian traffic but there would hardly be any Vegas people flying to Australia. That is the problem, you need both ends of market to have enough traffic and regular traffic.
