Denied seat recline on long haul

On a recent flight (SIN-SYD), the fellow in front of me reclined as soon as the wheels left the ground - come dinner I asked the FA to get him to put his seat forward - she said she "was't allowed to" and that it was "against the rules" to wake a passenger at any time to move their seat forward, even during service. This surprised me - it made my dinner very awkward. Was she lying?

I would be very unhappy about this and I probably would have asked to be reseated elsewhere if possible at least for the meal. One person's 'right' to recline/sleep vs another's 'right' to eat their meal (reasonably) comfortably... luckily I haven't had passengers recline into my meal in my last few flights.

That's BS, lean over and push his/her button so to speak and make their seat upright.

Which airline ?

Which airline ?

Not sure I understand your question but I haven't had to try eating a meal while the passenger in front has reclined on any airline.

Hopefully one of the posters on AFF who know about cabin crew instructions can pipe up about whether there really is a rule that sleeping passengers aren't disturbed at the expense of those behind them. It doesn't make much sense to me at the moment. Admittedly I've only seen passengers woken up and their seat put upright during the meal service on other airlines (MH, SQ).

Ive had to eat dinner while seated behind a reclining (AFL player) passenger on a MEL-LAX; FAs were too excited about them to fix the problem, but did get them upright for breakfast.

In that case I would have advised the FA if they didn't make the AFL (Probably a low level player if he is in Y) footballer sit upright I would take a photo of the probably intoxicated footballer and put it on the net and tell the world about QF's treatment of everyday punters!

She was lying. You have every right to eat your dinner like a human being not an animal.

The silence from the vocal recliners suggests to me they support this sort of action.

The vast majority have no issues with not reclining during meals.

I flew to Singapore two days ago, was in 23A, I of course did not recline as there was a big guy sitting behind me. He actually thanked me while we were waiting to exit the plane. His words "Thanks for not putting your seat back".

I slept fine without having to make someone else uncomfortable, just because it is allowed.

We both had a good flight. Win Win.:!:

Honestly, they were very well behaved for the whole flight. And it was my first long-haul flight, so I probably wasnt as vocal as I could have been. They were some big-name players too...

If it was an AFL player in front of me I probably would have made a scene, seeing as I don't like football or football players!

She did offer for me to move - to the adjacent vacant seat! But the aisle seat was occupied by a sprawling passenger so it wouldn't have been any better.

Sort of neatly sums up the attitude of a lot of people on this thread.

Well done MalWare.

I'm currently touching lots of wood that no one has reclined on me for a while but then most of my recent flights are daytime domestic. If I get reclined on, I have to recline also but always slowly and try to not recline all the way. If the pax in front stays upright, so will I.

I flew ADL-SYD on Fri with VA and deliberately reclined for the entire flight, even through meal service  !

I was in 1F and the only other pax in J was in 1A.

It felt good!

Which was clearly not the case here as the person reclined on ascent and fell asleep. Their intention was to sleep for as long as possible without any consideration for the person behind.

And I have also had an FA refuse to wake the person in front during meal service.

But that is OK. Recliners have a right to have a comfortable flight as per the terms and conditions of the ticket they purchased.

Again, the vast majority do not have an issue with complying. It is the same with most things you always have a handful who decide that they are above the law.
