Hi all,

I purchased a non-upgradable Y flight SYD-JFK for early next year... I am beginning to regret the choice of Y, and though I understand I can't upgrade with points does anyone know if it is possible to 'upgrade' by paying the fare difference to Y+?

thanks!

sure you could upgrade to Y+ for cash. Isn't there a special on now that you might be able to take advantage of? How much is all going to depend on your ticket and change fees etc etc - or whether or not you can even make the change without them having to cancel the ticket (which would be a waste).

You could if you wanted ring up and buy a comfort seat - split the cost if there are two of you travelling. You don't pay any fees or taxes. So you'd get the the width it not the extra leg room.

Finally - if you are really lucky and travelling during an 'off peak premium cabin time' (like holidays) you might be lucky enough to get an email offering you the ability to request an upgrade on non-upgrade fares (N/O/Q). They seems to have these from time to time.

Bottom line - call ask ask them how much it will be (or if you even can). See if you can use the current Y+ specials (maybe pay the difference). Ask how much a comfort seat would be.

Best option as Mel_Traveller suggested is to take advantage of specials, they seem to come up quite frequently although there's no guarantee there will be one for the period you're travelling and with QF increasing fares by 3% in a couple of weeks you may not want to wait.

Generally all QF fares even non-refundable ones can be used as a credit towards a fare of equal or higher value, so you'll pay the difference between the new fare and what you paid, any difference in taxes due to fluctuations between then and now and a reissue fee which is usually $150-200'ish
