Had a great trip down to perisher. Instead of the usual flying we drove.

The best snow vehicle is probably the one with snow tyres fitted.
I drive a Subaru with caution.

Assuming you mean what car to drive in the alpine environ, then any AWD should do the trick. Preferably one with traction control. I also prefer a manual so I can keep it in a gear a bit higher than an auto may choose.

If you mean for driving on the snowfields then I have a soft spot for the Polaris Indy 500. Had lots of fun on one when I used to work above the snow line.

One with a plow out front

In all seriousness, a 2WD with chains can do just as well as a 4WD/AWD without. I know NSW has no chain requirement for 4WD/AWD, but if you're new to snow driving I'd recommend hiring a set of chains regardless. The main advantages a 4WD or AWD give are higher ground clearance and more drive in select situations (mainly with snow on road). Ice doesn't discriminate, and will take out any car regardless of drive config.
