Daylight Saving

Wonderful long summer days is what I miss most about Europe since moving Down Under, I love going back to Europe in summer and have light till 10 or 11pm

I guess you pay for it in the winter though as the sun sinks to the horizon at 3pm!

I think I miss the idea of long summer evenings more than the actuality. It tends to mean that the "lights" are on at 4AM and off at 10PM so if trying for an early night or a late start - forget it. In winter here I am still leaving the office in the dark or at best getting home in the dark.

I do love that also, but in Norway (quite) some years ago I was in a sporting competition and we had post-match drinks. The cue to think about eating dinner was darkness, hence come about 11PM it dawned (pun intended) on us that darkness was not going to happen. We were too far gone for any serious cooking at this stage!

Bugger! Upsets all of my Foxtel timings.

Got the same issue, naturally.

DST would be fine if programs stayed at the same time in all states as when DST isn't active, but the simple fact they don't drives me nuts. At least what's series linked will still put up a reminder at the new correct time.

Being a QLD'r and having spent 20 odd years living in Sydney.....I miss it:(

Daylight Saving is great.

It should be compulsory for everyone and all year round. Seriously who gets off on having darkness at 4:00pm anyway? :(

Snuck out for an early 9 before work at a nearby course. Shot 5 over (I'm off 13 so I didn't mind it) and was at work by 7:40am. Sorry but you can keep your DS, the mornings in Perth are just glorious.

It's been getting dark here around 6 - 6:30 on the Gold Coast... not sure how Brisbane is getting such a raw deal, being just up the motorway, though agree a slightly later evening would be nice too, and just for simplicity with the rest of the country (other than WA)!

Where is this mythical place that is dark a 4pm during the daylight saving period? I suggest it does not exist. Also exactly how would it help having it dark at 5 pm?

Not that variable day length across the year is an issue so close to the equator, but one could easily argue that Singapore and peninsula Malaysia do have permanent daylight savings. Feels weird flying east and putting the clock back. Actually it could also be argued that the western half (2/3?) of China also has permanent daylight savings.

I do. Seriously, I burn just thinking about the sun. Put me in it and I become a lobster, instantly. Thanks to my European Genetics for that one.

I'd rather live in dark than light, but hey, no one ever said I Was normal :P

For those West aussies that think they're missing out, our timezone is centred around kalgoorlie so we get approx 30min of DS anyway.

Close :-). Perth is located around E116 and GMT+8 is E120. So it is 16 mins ahead.

Sydney gets dark ~4:00pm in winter.

Assuming normal business are 9:00am-5:00pm (yes I know there are many variations) then by the time I have finished work sunlight in Brisbane is mainly gone. It is no good to me at 4:00am. I prefer sunlight, and I suspect most people, at the end of the day.

But I understand that most people living in Brisbane want to go hide in their burrows as soon as work is over which is why most businesses are shut at 8:00pm.

Which has absolutely nothing to do with daylight savings time, AKA Summer time!
Which is why I said we should have daylight savings all year round.

Is that not the right term? Then move the clocks forward this summer and keep them there indefinitely....

And what happens in the morning in winter? Just because you like to get to work at 10am doesn't mean it suits everyone.
