New BNE pickup area with 20 mins free parking to open late August.

It’ll actually be very easy to claim the free 20 minutes and then drive out to the roundabout, turn right and go straight back into the car park. However, I’ll probably still head to the GA Lookout instead, and just stop in to do the pickup, instead of taking 20 minute stints in it!

What I’d like to know is what powers they have to move people on and/or fine them if they pick up from the dropoff area. Can they enlist the AFP, or do they not have the power to get the AFP’s help in that matter… sort of similar to private car park fines and no one paying them I suppose.

From my experiences venturing in & out of BNE DOM & INT airports every other day.. It is still the most underwhelming infrastructure airport traffic facility in Australia. The Gestapo attitude of the traffic management facilitators & the ridiculous 'enhancement" of arrangements only supports the funnelling of vehicle traffic to the overpriced parking facilities of BAC.. Perhaps as an alternate purchase some shares in BAC group of companies to claim your car parking dividend.

This latest pickup parking fiasco would have to be the biggest advertisement for why Governments should not be allowed to sell off major infrastructive such as airports to private enterprise!

BAC previously had bay 15C as a drive out bay for aircraft but in their wisdom decided to put a light pole right in front of it in their latest round of 'enhancements' so any aircraft that parks there now needs to be pushed back by a tug. Then there's all the new retail shops on the departures level at the expense of seating for passengers.

A.complete disappointment..
TBH.. The whole BNE DOM airport infrastructure is way past its 'use by date". It is old, antiquated & dirty in most parts, despite the recent 'enhancements" of a 'cash cow" multistory car park & added walkways. What worked in 1988 is clearly unsuitable for terminal & infrastructure 2012 & beyond with the ever growing flight & passenger numbers.

BAC appear to be playing 'patch up & catch up" games, with passenger convenience a secondary role to the priority revenue streams of car parking & retail.. despite their 'self appointed accolades"

Totally agree.

I hope they've thought this out properly.

If they had, they wouldn't have come up with this ridiculous idea.

I can not believe there has not been absolute outrage to this idea from passengers or the airline. I agree with John Phelan, a cynical attempt to get paid parking. Though i did only pay $2 there recently. NOW the really big difference with the pick up space at Brisbane to sydney or Melbourne - is it is a 600 metre walk from Qantas to the area. Their own website says allow 10 to 15 minutes to walk there!! yet the are 3 lanes dedicated to buses and taxis and who knows what else. NO other airport ( except possibly Adelaide) has this log jam - mainly because its a one level departure and arrival set up not two. People are going to continue to try pick ups in the drop off zone.

I have queried BAC on why another pick up area couldnt be designated in the recently retired temp care park to the N/E of Qantas - "oh that area is required for the second runway" - what BS. Guess what BAC - you wouldnt need to cross any roads and could leave via the back of the long term carpark.

I think the outrage will happen once people find out the hard way what's going on. I heard about it on Triple M today but was unaware of their plans until now.

I doubt the AFP would want to get involved with BAC parking matters they've got other fish to fry.

Heading out to pick up a friend soon. Going to have them wait in the drop off zone and grab and run!

Well I missed the opportunity but my friend, Mayor of a provincial city was disgusted that they had to walk 500m , welcome to Brisbane!

Have they changed the escalators now from the pick up area so they move in an upward direction only?

What a complete joke. It is beyond obvious that this is intended to funnel people into the overpriced paid parking "oh bugger it, I'll just pay to save myself having to walk for 15 minutes to get to the car". And define "mobility limitations"? My mum would struggle to walk that distance pulling a suitcase. So that would mean I'd have to walk down to meet her and then back again. If they are touting 15 minutes to walk that far, how on earth are you supposed to accomplish a "return trip" in the allotted 20 minutes?

edit: from the bne.com website

Drivers picking-up passengers with a disability or mobility problem who do NOT have a disabled parking permit, can use the Departures/Drop-off Road to pick-up their passengers but must advise the Kerbside Officer before leaving their vehicle to avoid being towed.

So they are going to start towing people? That should get interesting ...

Also:

If you wish to spend time in the terminal meeting, greeting and assisting passengers, the best option is to park in P1 - the new multi-level car park closest to the terminal. Remember it’s only $6 for up to 30 minutes parking in the new car park.

So there it is, come on, it's only $6, just pay to park .... too bad if you hit 31 minutes, because then you are going to get slugged $14 !!!

From what I can see it completely rules out meet and greet. Park, 8 minute walk, wait for visitor to arrive minimum 2 minutes, 8 minute walk. Fantastic
Also, why the hell can't taxi's dropping off pax pick up a passenger? I live close to the airport and hate the grumpy but understandable reaction of a taxi driver who's waited for an hour for a $22 fare.

I agree with meet and greet in the International terminal, but not so much in the Domestic, especially considering the state of the inside near the baggage carousels ad how much it already is… I understand some older people would benefit from being met, but the vast majority should coordinate with their pickup person to meet them at the pickup point, instead of at the terminal. That’s what I’ll be doing from now on.

The taxi issue is to do with the Taxi companies and the airport I’d imagine. They have a system set up, which is the same in all major airports?

Brisbane airport have a Facebook page, please help to maintain the rage.

Ihear they may host football matches in the spare space between the drop off zone and the terminal building. 30 taxis and 3 phv and loads of nothing

That may be so, but are’t they constructing new bays near where the Dash-8 aircraft park? I know it’s technically not the same parking, but is all of that for just QantasLink, or will SkyTrans and others be moving closer to the main terminal? Anyone know. Got some good photos of it as I took off the other day.

This will be interesting when I collect my aged mother in law, while she doesn't have a disability she isn't a youngster anymore. The walk is not so much the problem. It's the luggage that bothers me. With the extra charge to use a trolley at the Dom terminal , I think I will have to use P1 and walk in to ensure she is collected with no hassle. So instead of reducing traffic, I will now take up parking space, adding to the pedestrian traffic and overall congestion. Bad planning BAC.

It is I, Leclerc !

Actually, that's what they want (revenue). So it's good planning - make pick up such a nightmare it's easier to pay them to park (otherwise known as the SYD/Macquarie model........)

I think the BAC is assuming that with the airlines offering status matches and double SCs etc, most passengers will soon have lounge access so there won't be any requirement for the airport to provide passengers seating at the gate lounges.

Perhaps its QF's thinking, after all its their terminal which is leased wholly from BAC from Gate 25 back.

Yes. A bit obvious I suppose

And naturally, the scheme is a bust:

Brisbane Airport Corporation acknowledges failure of new pick-up zone, calling for ideas for improvements | News.com.au

Only credit to BAC is actually admitting they got it wrong - for a stubborn monopolistic company, that takes some guts.

Now that they've gone through this effort to set up the new area, not sure what they can do to make it better. Extending the permissible free wait time is not the answer.

Saw on Ch10 News in BNE last night that BAC are calling an emergency meeting & will make a statement in 48 hours.

The spokeswoman was still clinging to the fact that the distance
from the terminal to the pick up area "is only 358 metres" so they're still clearly in Fairyland.

I would have thought using the "old" temporary carparks (one at the DJ end of the terminal, one at the QF end - ie the ones they used to use when they were doing the consturction of the new carparks) would be the way to go.

The current ones are clearly too far away, especially when you charge $4 for a trolley and it takes 10 mins to walk there (and the limit is 20mins).

A common complaint from families is you can't get trolleys in the car park & it's near impossible to juggle a couple of toddlers, suitcases, carseats & strollers from the carpark to the terminal otherwise.

Is there actually anything from stopping people being picked up in the drop off zone?

I went through on Monday night, but just grabbed the freebie bus to DFO to avoid the whole rigmarole ...
