Yesterday when leaving Sydney I found a decent sum of money on the ground in T3 at Sydney airport. It was handed in to security, and they said it went to Qantas, who would donate it to charity if it was unclaimed. I was not given the chance to leave my details or given any sort of receipt number (though they said the money would be receipted). Is this true or was I given a bum-steer?

I have all details of amount, time, date etc, and was planning on calling Qantas tomorrow to verify, but thought someone on here might know.

I would have thought it should have gone back to you if it went unclaimed?

Thats what I thought too, and what I've been told by others, which is why I'm going to call QF myself.

Given I know all the details, and it could be checked via security, I would have liked that to be the case (not that Im opposed to it going to charity, I just dont want it pocketed by someone else).

I suspect it is now buying a few rounds for the security staff you gave it to. Would of been better off handing it to the Police.

They did seem to be logging the details of the money; I actually found it at the security screening... me thinks a call needs to be made.

What money sir? I don't recall you giving us any money sir. Have you got a receipt sir?

Forgive me...........I'm a practising cynic.

Yeah I wouldnt have handed it to security, I would have given it to the Customer Service Desk. It would have been easier for QF to follow up because they would have known who was on duty.

Unfortunately it all happened in a bit of a fluster and there wasn't an opportunity to NOT hand it to security. I've spoken to QF who have said to talk to lost and found this week; the money should become mine if it's not claimed.

After a period of time has elapsed, usually 3 months, if the owner has not claimed it, it is yours

Yup; QF have said the same thing.

Coulnd't have handed it to a QF employee as there was no one to be seen in the terminal (so empty that I actually took a photo!)

That really is eerily quiet...

I was quite stunned; we came up the escalator from the train station and saw the place was completely empty. Quite suprising for 6pm, admittedly a Saturday, but still!

Spoke to a few people at Qantas this morning and I'm not particularly impressed. Seems the money was receipted then put in the QF Slush Fund (their words), with pretty much no chance of even being claimed by the person that lost the money, let alone by me. I've got one more call to make, but it looks like I'll be left with a sour taste in my mouth.

I would have gone for the police too. No chance it would have disappeared into any coffers, personal or otherwise.

Maybe you should have just kept it.

My daughter is a specialist at finding money on the ground. Then again, she's a lot closer to it than me.

Are there any police in the airport terminal? That place was so empty is was quite strange.

The problem with keeping it is that it is "theft by finding"....I wonder if that applies to QF too?

If it had been $5 or 10 I would have just kept it, but it was over $100 and the person that dropped it wouldn't have been too far ahead of me.

There was an article about what happens to QF lost property and how is disposed of a little while ago, it was an eye opener!

AFP do the policing in the airport precinct, AFAIK. Much the same as the airport firies are first response to medical 9and fires of course).

The state agencies always get second bite.

Still, taking it to the airport police presence would have been the preferred option. Even if airport security insisted you hand it to them. After all, they are just security guards, not police.

And, BTW, how much is a "decent sum"?

Did you speak to the nominated contact:

Sydney Airport (Domestic) T3 -
Qantas Airways
Qantas Duty Security Controller:

First time Ive ever travelled out of sydney on QF so I wouldnt have had a clue where to find the police. The money was on the floor at security, so I asked the person in front of me if they had dropped any money. They were security, and the money was taken from me pretty much :(

I've spoken to Lost and Found at T3, and then to Sales (as that is where the money has gone). They've told me to talk to Customer Care to find the official answer, but of course there is no phone number for that. I might try the above.

I'm not fussed (too much, though it would be handy) if I can't claim the money, but I think its terrible that the original owner cannot either. Greedy much QF?
