I thought this now warranted a separate thread here, as it has happened to us twice now, and several others have had the same issue.

We bought return Business Class MEL - OOL. Both times, the plane flown on was configured with Premium Economy, not Business seating. Both times, we found this out only after the plane was boarded.

Those who have followed the other thread where our original flight was discussed will recall what Virgin told us about their "rogue" PE aircraft;

1. Only 2 left in service. [Edit - note at least THREE listed below still in active service]
2. All J passengers would get a call the night before to advise of the PE seating and offer alternatives.

Given what happened to us MEL-OOL we spent a lot of time on the phone with Virgin Velocity being assured...TWICE...that the return plane was a proper Business configuration 737.
We asked at check-in whether this was business seating and were reassured "yes, these are the grey business seats, not the red premium economy seats".

We got red premium economy seats. (The CSM onboard assured us that there had been no last minute aircraft substitution).

Not happy Virgin.

The proffered call the night before *almost* happened - we were unable to pick up the phone in time (to a caller ID blocked number) and no message was left, so we had no way of knowing it was Virgin. It's still noted at their end that contact was attempted. Unimpressive effort, particularly given the multiple times we confirmed, including at check-in, that the plane was a business configured plane.

A measure of an airline is how they respond when things go wrong. Here are some sample responses;

"The business product is new. You can't expect us to take all our planes out of service to refit them at the same time."
"You're on a Business Fare. You do know all of this [food] is free."

Wrong mindset, Virgin.

Virgin have really played a stupid card here.

I have been booked to fly Business Class 6 times since the Business Launch and been stuck on these ridiculous red seats three times without an apology. As for a call I have never received one ever. On one of the flights Not only was priority boarding ignored they had catering issues which meant no Business Meals and Red Seats. I paid an extra $500 for nothing.

You can complain in writing but Even if you are a Platinum Business customer they promise a 21 day response time to emails. (Email was sent to VA 8 days ago with no reply yet....

I cant tell you how pissed I am with this promise the world and deliver nothing product.

There is an easy solution to the problem... Well not so much for J flights to OOL though...

Perhaps an automatic sms service the day before would be better, something along the lines of "Due to aircraft config VA regrets to inform you that your upcoming flight DJ123 will be a PE equipped service, please ph our guest centre 131xx_ for alternative flight options etc etc" plus an automatic credit of say 20-50% of fare would be a simple and workable solution to prevent this happening. It really couldn't be that hard to do could it????

Those "2" rouge configured aircraft sure do fly around a lot, don't they?

I know the "easy" solution to this problem - Qantas J MEL-BNE and then drive to the Gold Coast.

Perfectly happy to do this, but when you are given misinformation by multiple people at Virgin assuring you that you will be getting a J configured aircraft and you only find out when boarding that it isn't, then the opportunity to choose to change flight or get a refund is simply not there.

We would have been 100% happy both times to choose other aircraft or choose Qantas - no problems, no ill-will - but we were not given the opportunity. Instead, we were deceived into taking the inferior product.

Virgin are promoting the bejeezus out of J at the moment "on all major routes" and even have a GIANT billboard you go past when driving into OOL with words to the effect "The ONLY Business solution to the Gold Coast" and a lovely picture of their J class. 'Tis nowt but a classic bait 'n' switch.

Re: Virgin Business Class Lottery - now 0 for 2. Pay for Business, get Premium Econom

I was absolutely livid last night flying CNS-BNE. I knew in advance it was an 800 with Business Class and I confirmed it earlier in the day with the Lounge staff in Brisbane.

It turned out to be a 700 with no Business Class, and the Live2Air screen didn't work either. There was no acknowledgement of this downgrade from airport staff or Cabin Crew. No apology, anything.

I am now very tempted to cancel my other J class bookings.

"But it's Business Class, MomoWang. See it says so right here on your ticket."

But that's the kicker.... on the bottom of the Boarding Pass where it normally says 'Business'.... it said 'Premium'. I guess that is the only evidence I have that what I received was not what I paid for.

Out of curiosity how did you "know" it was a 738, given the timetable only indicates 73W and E190s operating? It probably explains the attractive pricing on the route given the usual equipment is likely to NOT have J seats, but J service! There were clearly some subs happening yesterday with the cancellations ex MEL, at least one 738 flew CNS-BNE (VH_VOU)

Surely a formal complaint with a request that your next Y ticket be upgraded to J is fair? You're not some 1-off flyer with a grudge. Surely they want to protect their FFs, especially for such a embarrassing stuff-up as this.

How were VA able to refit almost all of their aircraft with J seating in such a short time yet it takes them 4 years to repaint everything in the new livery? I reckon of the 10 VA trips Ive taken since the relaunch, only 1 has had the new livery!

Re: Virgin Business Class Lottery - now 0 for 2. Pay for Business, get Premium Econom

Oh that sucks big time. I was thinking of trying a J Flight with Virgin some time soon, but may give it a miss until they get their act together!

Re: Virgin Business Class Lottery - now 0 for 2. Pay for Business, get Premium Econom

Hi markis10,

I usually make a courteousy call to the Call Centre a day or two before the flight. The right question identifies if it is a 700 or an 800. Confirmation then on the day at check-in and at the Lounge.

I think you are correct. The broken Airbus triggered a number of changes and the second -800 to CNS yesterday didn't make it.

Is it just me, or does anybody else think this is bs? You need to call up to ensure you are going to get the product you have paid for, that's crazy stuff, and they are really frustrating those pax who they have actually attracted from qf to try this out... Very bad virgin, you shouldn't advertise something you cannot provide

For me, I don't fly j so it doesn't bother me, but if I had paid the premium like the OP it would be the last time for me, I would be back at qf in a shot

That was a little cheeky of me but every time someone complains about QF we get hit with "well you can fly with DJ/VA".

I actually don't understand why you haven't been offered any "compensation" - it's not like booking a 763 and getting a 738 on QF. This is a measurable degradation of product.

BNE-CNS and MEL-OOL seem to be the ones being reported (I got what was promised in last weeks J trips), coincidently both those options are at the lowest end of the scale for cost, yes you have a choice to fly the opposition in the case of BNE-CNS, but at a premium $488 versus $899. I suspect the premium equipment is being put on legs where the competition is a lot closer price wise!

I have not had a flight on old fitted aircraft in a few months and thats a few trips each week to Syd return. I was on the flight that aborted landing at GC twice last week only to return to Syd, I then had to go to Bris airport and make my way down, that plane was an older fitted aircraft. I wasn't in Business on that anyway, today I was and it was a new one.

Re: Virgin Business Class Lottery - now 0 for 2. Pay for Business, get Premium Econom

Each of the three times I have been ripped off with this scam its been on the SYD to ADL legs, twice on DJ402. Its interesting to read the comments about there only being 2 737-700's in the fleet with the old fitout I have been told as well by 2 different Dj Staff. Is that correct? I thought I read there were still about 12 or 15 of these things still in the fleet.

What is this Rogue Airlines that everyone seems to complain about? Remind me to give them a miss next time I fly. They sound waaaaay bad.

Re: Virgin Business Class Lottery - now 0 for 2. Pay for Business, get Premium Econom

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a scam or a bait-and-switch -their intent is not malicious. I do, however, think it is rather sloppy and unprofessional when they want to portray that professional image, and they need to get this right as soon as possible.
