I guess that would be 9 A380's @ 466 Passengers each.

That has to of been one of the luckiest incidents I have seen at sea, it could of been far worse.

Mind you, if Emirates keep going the way they are then they might just match it. :(

Check out the photos at The Sun UK. There is a rock sticking out of the side of the ship. RIP to those that perished. What is with the safety drill not done until the day after sailing. I thought they had to be done before the ship sailed.
maggies1

Exactly 99 years and 9 months since Titanic struck the iceberg... 999 (the emergency number in the UK)... only a matter of time until the conspiracy theories start!

Seriously though, glad that amost everyone has currently been accounted for! :)

CNN is reporting that the captain has been arrested on two charges, the most serious of which is "abandoning the ship"

So much for the captain goes down with the ship.

I didn't think that'd been the case for a while, but he should have helped evacuate guests.

Interesting photos I'm seek this morning.

Captain should be the last one off.

Nice photo of a great big boulder wedged into the side of the ship. It also doesn't appear to of sank where it hit the reef, captain said they turned to get closer to the shore after the impact. Coast Guard have removed the ships black box recorder (which was orange too) for analysis. Initial reports suggest he could of been up to 4Nm off course.

Seeing the thread title, I had a sudden vision of Michael O’Leary’s next advertising campaign for Ryanair.
But surely he couldn’t be that crass?

Ahhh, i still wouldn't mind going on a cruise sometime, not desperate for it, but still nice to try....

Hmmm, watching a program called Cruise Ship Diaries tonight on Foxtel and the ship is the Costa Serena... Looks pretty similar to that ship and probably from the same company...

It is the same company. Watched that entire series. Different captain. Good show initially but recent episodes have been dramatised.

I remember being in Rosslare Port in Ireland about 4 years ago waiting for my sister to come off a Irish Ferries boat from Fishguard. The ship approached the port at her starboard side as she has to come in stern first. The harbour master miscalculated the speed and distance and struck the point of the port on the ships starboard side.

The entire dock shook with the impact. I remember going up to the ship after it docked to inspect the damage and I noticed it was barely a dent. I can only imagine how much pressure was required to do the damage that was done to the stricken ship in italy.

Latest news from the TV is that the captain took the ship on an unauthorised route and that was where the issue came in.

Costa Serena is a Concordia class ship, and the "sister ship" of Costa Concordia. They are basically identical.

This is certainly a tragedy, but it's not going to stop me from cruising (I disembarked from my last cruise only 2 weeks ago, after spending 16 nights travelling around New Zealand). There is something special about waking up every morning to a different view from your balcony, which is something you can't do when you fly somewhere and stay in a hotel.

From what I've read so far the only people who have perished are those that did not follow procedures which are explained to you in a compulsory drill prior to the ship's sailing. On my most recent cruise (Royal Caribbean's Radiance of the Seas) they even checked off each person individually and made sure they attended and understood the briefing.

it has been reported on the news that the safety briefing was not done before they sailed and was scheduled for the day after the accident. They also said that ships regularly sailed close to this island and gave a blast of the "air horn". And residents around SYD think they have problems.

OT cruise ship diaries gets boring after awhile. I haven't seen a new episode in at least 6 months.

Interesting.

I always thought it was a requirement of international maritime law to hold the muster drill prior to departure, but it seems that it may only be a requirement to hold one within 24 hours of departure.

Each ship I've been on (across Royal Caribbean, Princess and P&O) has conducted the drill prior to departure.

Apparently the Captain had headed closer to show to "show off" to the locals. I have visions of a P-plater doing doughnuts in front of his mates' place. How exactly do you "show off" in a cruise ship?

Also, it wasn't only passengers that perished.

One of the eye witness reports I read said that they got into the last life raft, and there were six crew members left on board. They all jumped from the ship to the water (bad idea, should have waited to be rescued) and one of them died when he hit the water. Which is an even bigger tragedy considering that he actually stayed back to help the passengers evacuate unlike the cowardly captain.

Delaying the drill is being reported negatively, so I say it was not ok to delay it. There are also crew quoted as saying that the evacuation was impaired because passenger had no idea about what to do. So this accident would highlight exactly why the drill needs to be done before departure.

I thought this was the case too... Disney cruises also give the briefing before departure. With this experience, I would think they would definitely make the briefing before departure from now on?
