And I am none the wiser.

Hopefully BMI will still be around in the short term and even better if they are still around in the long term as well.

So the issue is that they gain slots, but choosing what to do with them is hard. They have two options:

  1. They convert BMI into an LCC to better compete on the short haul sectors which they can’t make much of a profit from, it makes the most sense as they just follow Qantas’ lead.
  2. They use the slots to fly wide bodies to more long-haul destinations, particularly Asia and the Middle East/Africa, expanding to markets they want to be in.
They can’t really do both though, so they have to choose wisely.

It will probably be the Middle Eastern routes which they, ironically, sold to BMI some years back.
